Great tour! A lovely half-day tour with my wife and our 1 1/2 year old in the backpack, with a quick lunch at Kasselburg. Highly recommended!

Trail Reviews

Jürgen S.
May 26, 2025, Gerolsteiner Felsenpfad

This tour in the Eifel is also a highlight. Great trails, fascinating rock formations, and plenty of information about geology and volcanism. And, as a special feature, the accessible Buchenloch Cave.

Still Dolomites 8 on August 10, 1925 with the Eifelverein Bad Münstereifel: the Rock Path: after leaving the town on the opposite side, the narrow paths began, leading us steadily uphill towards Munterley at 482 m. From the vantage point there, we had a fantastic view of the town and the volcanic Eifel ranges. We continued on the mountain path, past mighty rock formations to the Buchenloch Cave. A 36-meter-long karst cave that was inhabited by humans in the Paleolithic period. We continued hiking, accompanied by rocks, past lava walls, and in the last few kilometers of the tour, we passed near Kasselburg Castle with its 37-meter-high twin towers (now the Eagle and Wolf Park). Steep, shady forest paths led us down back to Gerolstein. Approx. 8 km - 230 m elevation gain The Dolomites Night: a highly recommended tour, the Rock Path is especially beautiful.

Unfortunately not fully accessible due to diversion. But very beautiful.

Yesterday evening I spontaneously decided to do the Gerolsteiner Felsenpfad - Eifelsteig in Gerolstein. The route was beautiful and varied, and not just in terms of the terrain. Over fields in scorching heat (you could practically smell and taste it) and through cool forests, but without a gentle breeze, we went into the Buchenloch cave and up to the Munterley lookout point with a view over Gerolstein.

Unfortunately, I couldn't really grasp why the trail went through Gerolsteiner Switzerland. Okay, the paths were steep, but it wasn't until 2 km before the end that I felt like I was hiking in a mountain range/Switzerland. The name doesn't exactly live up to expectations.

On the way to the "Gerolsteiner Dolomiten-Acht" hiking trail. Unfortunately we only had time for one loop and that became the northern one. From Gerolstein it goes up and through impressive rock formations up to Munterley. Here you have a beautiful view of Gerolstein. On the way back you can see the Kasselburg from above and a dry maar can also be seen (if you know what it looks like. The Buchenloch Cave is a real highlight, definitely also for children.

Another beautiful tour of the Eifelsteig. Check out the pictures.

This very well signposted circular route from Gerolstein has earned the title “Premiumweg”! The climb to Munterley Rock makes you warm, but is rewarded with a great panorama. We continue through a very varied landscape, across fields, along green mossy rocks, a spectacular Stone Age cave and many informative information boards line the path. In addition, today at the beginning of March the hoped-for warm spring weather with sunshine finally arrived... it could hardly have been nicer. Gerolstein itself is a bit dreary as a place on Sundays, hardly a café is open on the traffic-calmed old main street. You can practically park at the Kyll train station as a starting point for just 1 euro a day (!). Unfortunately, you cannot walk the last 2 km directly along the Kyll as a bridge there is closed. The well-signposted diversion leads through a residential area back to Gerolstein train station.
