The parking space indicated at the start is subject to a fee. You can also start at the “Bahnhöfele” car park, which is free.

Trail Reviews

April 30, 2025, Löwenpfad 7/16 Filsursprungrunde.🦁🌿

A day off + sun = hiking boots on.➡️🥾🦁 Lion's Path no. 7/16. Beautiful paths, lots of flowers, bright colors, butterflies, views, etc. I really liked the Lion's Path.

No appointments in the calendar, the weather forecast is acceptable, the ailments are modest - so I quickly look for accommodation and head off to the Swabian Alb again! On the day of arrival I take one of the lion trails under my feet: https://www.loewenpfade.de/start/loewenpfade/filsursprung-runde.html The hike begins at the Papiermühle car park (2 hours 3€, 24 hours 5€). First I hike on grassy paths and through a sunken path up the idyllic Autal to the Alb plateau, where it goes along wide meadows and fields. This is where my lucky winner awaits me: I discover an Alpine longhorn beetle, a very large, bright blue striped, very rare beetle! https://baden-wuerttemberg.nabu.de/tiere-und-pflanzen/insekten-und-spinnen/kaefer/04050.html https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpenbock From the Knaupenfels, a wonderful view opens up into the Neidlinger valley, to the Heimenstein and I catch a first glimpse of the Reußenstein ruins, to which I now continue hiking, with meadows and fields on one side and the eaves slope on the other. The Reußenstein castle ruins sit picturesquely on a rocky outcrop, the location and view are fantastic! https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruine_Reu%C3%9Fenstein http://www.reussenstein.de/index.html The tour now leads along a beautiful path on the eaves edge, some rocky outcrops offer beautiful views and views back to the ruins. From Bahnhöfle there are 3km of forest path (the nicer kind), first along meadows, then through the forest, this stretch is a bit long. The grey stone is worth admiring, a sign provides information about geological connections. A beautiful stretch of path now leads downhill and I make a detour to the Burkhardtshöhle, which was blown up. More impressive is the Steinernes Haus, a cave with a huge entrance hall, a crawl space leads further, but it is closed off with a fence. https://www.schwaebischealb.org/info/steinerne-haus/ From here it is only a few meters to the Schertelshöhle, a stalactite cave worth seeing. I'll skip it for now, as dogs aren't allowed in, and I'll drive there by car at the end of the tour. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schertelsh%C3%B6hle https://schertelshoehle.de/ From here I walk back through the Filsursprungtal (Hasental), initially 1km somewhat boring on a forest path through a nettle wasteland, then the valley opens up with meadows where butterflies flutter, the path is literally dazzling in the sun with its white limestone gravel. The Filsursprung is a beautiful place, the spring rises under trees, which produces an astonishing amount of water and immediately forms a proper stream that can be used as a Kneipp pool. https://www.wiesensteig.de/freizeit-tourismus/sehenswertes/filsursprung The last part of the way back leads along beautiful paths, partly forest path, partly grass path, partly sprinkled with wood chips, along the Fils back to the paper mill. CONCLUSION: A very pretty round, especially in the first half. Then the path levels off a bit, before finally becoming great again along the Fils. Reußenstein Castle is undoubtedly a great highlight, and you shouldn't miss the detour to the Stone House and the Schertels Cave!

Wild gorges with imposing rocks and views, steep cliffs, huge castle ruins and caves line the way. At the source of the Fils there was a cooling down directly in the source of the Fils. The spring water is excellent and drinkable. Here it's not as high as in the mountains but with a lot more green.

Today I did this 🦁 path. It's a really nice tour with the Reußenstein ruins and the Schertelshöle but also very muddy paths 🐷 You can see it again here in the 3D video: https://www.relive.cc/view/vLqe2P258dv

Even sunny in places, but still bitterly cold, today I enjoyed one of the most beautiful lion trails for me. I have been here so many times and I am always delighted by the great views, the spectacular Reußenstein, beautiful forest paths and the source of the Fils. I actually had it all to myself today, as well as the rest of the trail!! If that isn't a reason to be happy 😃🤗

Wonderful hiking tour with fantastic views from the Albtrauf. Beautiful valleys, varied forests. Barbecue area at the Filsursprung.

Lion Trails 10/16 ✔️ There is a lot of nature on offer on this tour, and you also pass the beautiful Reußenstein ruins and the source of the Fils. I first walked past the ruins and then back a bit. For a Lion Trail, you walk a bit too much on wide forest paths, but there are a few single trails. Before the source of the Fils, the valley got really busy, but the route along the Fils is really beautiful. I was pretty annoyed about one thing today. The signs for the Lion Trails said Schertelshöhle everywhere, but the Lion Trail doesn't actually go directly past there. At first I thought about making the detour there, but then I saw that you go straight past there on the Westerheim Cave Tour, and I want to do that too. So if you want to visit the cave, you should plan the detour.
