Peak Hill and Mutter's Moor — Exeter gravel routes

Mountain biking

Starting from Clyst St Mary, a village on the River Clyst to the east of Exeter, this circular Tour reaches above the popular seaside town of Sidmouth, taking in several heathland landscapes as well as woodlands and disused railway lines along the way. The village is easily accessed from Exeter thanks to the city’s growing network of cycle lanes, and also has free parking if you’re coming from further afield.

Start the Tour with a lengthy warm up as you climb the long Oil Mill Lane to Woodbury Salterton, then up some more to the edge of Woodbury Common. Peel off to the right for a brilliant doubletrack bridleway climb which takes you right up to Woodbury Castle.

You’ll head south on common bridleway gravel roads, heading straight through Blackhill Quarry, through the Frying Pans car park and onto Hayeswood Lane, descending off the common onto a mucky farm track. Follow more farm roads to Kersbrook, crossing the main East Budleigh Road to reach the River Otter.

Take the cycleway on the high ground alongside the River Otter heading north, enjoying this traffic-free way to the very quaint village of Otterton. There’s more climbing up next, heading up the well-known Peak Hill climb to Sidmouth, but turning off to the left just before the last, most gruelling stint. This bridleway, named Seven Lane, leads you up to Mutter’s Moor, a beautiful hilltop moorland quite similar to Woodbury Common.

Over the common, descend the singletrack bridleway to the golf course, then take a series of farm tracks to Bowd. Here you can pick up the brilliant disused railway bridleway through Harpford Woods to Tipton St John, and start to climb past Venn Ottery Common . From Aylesbeare, follow a series of back lanes through the countryside to complete the loop back to Clyst St Mary.

Bridleway to Woodbury Castle

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A great alternative to the steeper top of Castle Lane, along a rutted and often wet wide bridleway before a sharper climb up to the car park opposite Woodbury Castle.

From the top, make sure you look out over the estuary for some incredible views (weather permitting)!

10.6 km

Blackhill Quarry Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Ride through the centre of the old quarry here, with the lakes to either side and views to the coast. Look out on the water for birds, including Canada geese and tufted ducks.

Take it easy as there are gates at each end and it's a popular route for walkers.

12.5 km

Hayeswood Lane Doubletrack

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Brilliant mucky doubletrack lane from the common towards East Budleigh. Like with many of the farm tracks in this area, owned by Clinton Devon Estates, they have public access although do not have a right of way designation such as footpath or bridleway.

A great way to get to the River Otter from Woodbury Common.

Devon Farm Track

Highlight • Trail

Classic Devon farm track with plenty of mud and you guessed it - grass up the middle! Tracks in this area have public access although not designated as bridleways, and you can often see cows in the nearby fields enjoying the lush pasture.

River Otter Bike Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

River Otter bike paths are a cycle route along the River Otter in Devon, South West England. They are part of the East Devon Trail, a mixed terrain bikepacking route that showcases the diverse habitats and wildlife of the region. The bike paths are mostly gravel or dirt tracks, suitable for gravel, mountain or hybrid bikes. They offer scenic views of the river, the countryside and the coast, as well as passing through some charming villages such as Budleigh Salterton and Otterton

Seven Lane Bridleway to Mutters Moor

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Wow, what a treat. This climb from the last corner on the Peak Hill Road is a little techy with wet patches and some stones, running alongside the steep-sided Otterton Brook. I met some lovely sheep when I was hauling up, and it felt more like Exmoor than East Devon between the twisted trees.

24.4 km

Mutters Moor

Highlight • Forest

Enjoy this brilliant stretch of wide, sandy and stony bridleway between the heathland moor and forest plantation. Look through the trees for spectacular views of Sidmouth town and the English Channel.

Mutters Moor is one of the Pebblebed Heaths of East Devon, and home to nightjars and dartford warblers.

28.6 km

This is a great, flat off-road section that winds through Harpford Wood. This old railway line is well drained and sheltered so stays ridable all year round. It is a few miles long and despite being part of the National Cycle Network (NCN route 248) it is always really peaceful.

32.4 km

Venn Ottery Byway

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A great gravel road across the fields with a bit of a climb if you're heading to the west from Tipton St John. There's quite a few puddles when it's wet here, so if it's really bad you can take the lane to the south instead.
