Mount Nelson Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Mount Nelson Trail trail is steep and demanding. It begins in a thick forest and breaks out of the treeline after about 2 kilometers. Even below treeline, the trail is steep and sometimes hard to follow. After the treeline there is a meadow, and then scrambling begins.

Mount Nelson Scramble

Highlight • Climb

The Mount Nelson scramble is a class 3 scramble. There are traces of a trail, but it is easy to get off track in the loose scree. It is steep and often holds snow into the summer. Trekking poles are helpful, but have a place to store them in your pack when you arrive at the Class 3 scramble, as you will need to use your hands. If you are uncomfortable with navigation, loose rock, and scrambling, do not attempt to summit Mount Nelson.

Mount Nelson

Highlight • Summit

Summiting Mount Nelson is a challenging ascent, and the weather can turn quickly on this exposed rocky mountain. The summit is marked with a cross, and a class 2-3 scramble is required. From the tops there are views of Sultana Peak, Mount Catherine, and Mount Trafalgar. Begin your summit attempt early in the morning.
