Hiking
This hiking route through the Aachtobel is an impressive mix of wild nature, exciting history, and sweeping views. Deeply cut into the landscape, the Linzer Aach has created a gorge up to 120 meters deep here over millennia. A place that feels noticeably different: cooler, more original, almost a little mystical.
Right at the beginning, you dive into this special world. Between steep slopes and dense forest, the gentle rushing of the water accompanies you. In the middle of it lies the pilgrimage chapel Maria im Stein, a place full of history and a quiet atmosphere that has attracted people for centuries.
After the path through the gorge, the landscape opens up again. The ascent towards Hohenbodman takes you up to a special viewpoint: From the old tower, the last remnant of a medieval castle, the view extends far over the Linzgau, Lake Constance, and, in clear weather, to the Alps.
This tour thrives on its contrasts: wild and calm, shady and open, natural and scenic. That's exactly what makes it so special.

This time it was a contrast to NSG Aachtobel as one of the oldest NSG in Germany.
That alone sounded exciting, but the view on site was amazing.🤩
Accompanied by the water, we went uphill and downhill on narrow paths over hill and dale 🥾.

And yet it had something. I'm not on the tower. No view. But a young group with children came towards us. You liked it. Greetings to you. 👍👏

We started at the free car park below the tower in Hohenbodman.
After visiting the tower we went back towards the car park and then left down the tarmac road to Mayer's Burghöfe to enjoy an ice cream.

We parked right next to the tower in a well-designed, free parking lot for hikers.
First, we climbed the 137 steps up to the top of the tower - you'd better be sure-footed. Some of the steps are very worn. But the view is …

This time we also started from the Steinhöfe hiking car park. Shortly thereafter, steps descend into the ravine, and along the molasses rocks you reach the pilgrimage site of Maria im Stein.
Continue through the ravine to the flood retention basin, …

In fine weather, we went to the Maria im Stein pilgrimage chapel, through the Aachtobel ravine, and to the observation tower in Hohenbodman. Then we returned on a paved road and a short distance through the Aachtobel ravine.
