Gaustatoppen — Ridge and Summit

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

A strenuous but technically easy ascent to the summit, below which lies the terminus of the Gaustabanen railway and the DNT hut Gastatoppen Turisthytte. It is offering food and, during the season, overnight accommodations. At the top (and even along the way), you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of the Hardangervidda, Norefjell, and what feels like all of southern Norway.

What really makes this tour worthwhile, however, is the ridge walk to the actual summit. Winding through massive boulders, the route leads partly over firn sections (mid-May) to the summit cross. Occasionally, you’ll need to use your hands for some light climbing; but overall, the section is neither too exposed nor technically too difficult—as long as you stay on the right side of the boulders. So always follow the red T!

Just to avoid any misunderstanding: Gaustatoppen is not Norway’s second-highest mountain (that’s Glittertind at just under 2,460 meters).

In the fog the view was about 15m. Had the advantage that I was the only one on the summit! 😁
