Most hikers complete this 3.8-mile loop trail in about 90 to 150 minutes. However, your pace may vary depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
The South Pasture Loop Trail is considered moderately difficult. This is due to its elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, occasional river stones that can be tripping hazards, and one steeper hill. There is also very little shade, so hikers are exposed to the elements.
The trail primarily follows old ranch roads, consisting mostly of dirt. You might encounter occasional patches of river stones. While generally not overly strenuous, there is one section with a steeper grade. Be aware that there's very little shade along the route.
You'll be treated to sweeping views of the surrounding mesas and mountains. The trail winds through open pasture lands of the historic Forked Lightning Ranch, passes through a shady cottonwood grove, and runs along the bluffs of the Pecos River, offering a diverse natural landscape.
No, pets are not allowed on the South Pasture Loop Trail within Pecos National Historical Park.
Pecos National Historical Park is a fee-free park, so there is no entrance fee to access the trail. However, you must check in at the E.E. Fogelson Visitor Center for directions and a map before starting your hike.
The trail typically closes at 3:00 PM. Hikers are encouraged to start no later than 1:00 PM to ensure they have enough time to complete the loop before closing.
Given the lack of shade and higher elevation, spring and fall generally offer the most comfortable temperatures for hiking. Summer can be very hot and exposed, while winter conditions might include snow or ice, making some sections more challenging.
There are no amenities directly at the trailhead. Hikers should bring their own water, especially considering the lack of shade and the moderate difficulty of the trail. Restrooms and water are available at the E.E. Fogelson Visitor Center where you check in.
Due to its 'moderately difficult' rating, higher elevation, occasional tripping hazards, and lack of shade, this trail might be challenging for very young children or those not accustomed to hiking. Consider the 3.8-mile length and potential exposure to the elements when planning a family outing.
