Hiking

The Lion's Head Trail offers a dramatic, quick ascent to one of Alaska's most iconic viewpoints. You'll navigate rocky sections and rooty hillsides, sometimes needing to scoot over boulders, but the effort is quickly rewarded. From the top, you're treated to a spectacular view of the Matanuska Glacier, looking down a 2,000-foot cliff face, alongside sweeping panoramas of the Matanuska River and the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountain Ranges.

This 1.1-mile (1.8 km) hiking guide covers 812 feet (247 metres) of elevation gain in an estimated 47 minutes, making it a short but steep workout. While rated easy, the rapid elevation change and challenging terrain mean you'll want good physical condition and strong footing. It's a popular choice for those seeking a high-impact view without a lengthy commitment, but always check conditions before heading out.

Lion's Head is a famous rock outcropping right next to the Matanuska Glacier, making it a prime spot for glacier viewing. It's often highlighted as one of the best day hikes from Anchorage for this very reason. The trail provides a blend of challenge and rich visual payoffs, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

View of Matanuska Glacier from Lion's Head

Highlight • Viewpoint

A short and relatively challenging hike with a breathtaking view of the Matanuska Glacier! A must on Route 1!

The hike starts below the AT&T mast. There is a gravel parking lot there. The barrier says no entry. If you find a phone number, just give AT&T a quick call and let them know that you want to do the hike up Lions Head - that's what I read in various hiking recommendations. (We didn't see a sign with a phone number and just went.)

The hike is very steep and at times quite muddy. Hiking poles can be very helpful. The climb is rewarded with a spectacular view of the huge Matanuska Glacier.

Due to the steepness, I would recommend planning 2-3 hours depending on your fitness level.
