This route was planned by komoot.
While komoot rates this trail as easy, many hikers describe it as moderate, especially due to some steep sections. The initial descent and the return ascent can feel strenuous. The overall elevation change is around 250 feet, concentrated in certain parts. For an easier experience to the falls and back, it's recommended to go left at the split.
The trail features a natural dirt path with numerous rocks and roots, making it uneven in places. You'll trek through a wooded environment, dense with rhododendrons, and follow a creek. Be aware that rocks around the waterfall can be slippery.
Currently, due to two bridges below the waterfall being destroyed by flooding in September 2024, the trail is accessible as an out-and-back route to reach the waterfall. While it was previously described as a loop, it functions as an out-and-back until repairs are made.
Parking is conveniently available at the Buckeye Lake Recreation Center. The trailhead is located within this area.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to access the Buckeye Creek Falls Trail or the Buckeye Lake Recreation Area. It is free to enjoy.
Yes, the Buckeye Creek Falls Trail is dog-friendly. Please ensure your dog remains on a leash and that you clean up after them to help keep the trail enjoyable for everyone.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but spring offers vibrant rhododendron blooms, and fall provides stunning foliage. Summer is also popular, but be prepared for warmer temperatures. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.
You'll hike through a scenic wooded environment, following a creek with the sounds of cascading water. The main highlight is the beautiful Buckeye Creek Falls, a 15 to 25-foot cascading waterfall. A bridge in front of the falls offers excellent photo opportunities. You may also observe interesting geological formations, diverse plant life, and local wildlife.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Grassy Gap Trail and Woodside Lane. These are official trails that share parts of the Buckeye Creek Falls Trail.
Yes, the Buckeye Creek Falls Trail is recognized as a family-friendly hike. Its relatively short length and rewarding waterfall view make it a great option for families, though some sections can be steep for very young children.
For an easier experience to the falls and back, it's recommended to go left at the trail split. If you choose to do the full loop (when it's open again), going right at the split is often suggested as it leads down the steepest part, making the climb back up less challenging.
