Muir Beach

Highlight • Other

On the northern edge of Muir Beach, high above the cliffs of the Pacific coast and directly on California State Route 1, lies the Muir Beach Overlook. Muir Beach Overlook is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and contains the ruins of former American coastal artillery emplacements. During World War II, and especially after the attack on Pearl Harbor, these positions protected the coastal strip north of San Francisco from possible attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy.
