Hiking

Embark on the moderate Cheeseboro, Sheep Corral, and Palo Comado Canyon Loop, a 9.5-mile (15.3 km) hike that typically takes around 4 hours and 16 minutes to complete. You will gain 991 feet (302 metres) of elevation as you traverse diverse landscapes, moving from the shaded oak savanna and woodlands of Cheeseboro Canyon to expansive open grasslands and chaparral. The route offers a dynamic experience, winding through canyon bottoms and ascending to ridgelines where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of Oak Park, Agoura Hills, and Simi Valley.

Plan your visit by heading to the Cheeseboro Canyon Trailhead, which offers convenient parking to begin your journey. Be prepared for sections with little shade, especially on ridgelines, which can become very hot during summer; carrying plenty of water is essential. You should also expect to share these multi-use trails with mountain bikers and equestrians, and note that cell service may be limited in the more remote canyon areas.

This loop is nestled within the vast Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, offering a significant outing for nature enthusiasts. If you hike in spring, you might be treated to spectacular wildflower displays, including vibrant California poppies and lupine, adding a burst of color to the scenic route. The varied terrain and views make this trail a notable option for exploring the region's natural beauty.

Wow, late August and this is the 3rd time I've encountered some water areas so far on the ascent. This is a fun area that gets really narrow up ahead where both hands are rubbing overgrown plants at the same time. It eventually really opens up shortly after but you just have to watch for others coming down.
