Gravel riding

The Champorcher Valley Cycle Route takes you through high-altitude landscapes, from the main town of Pontboset with its ancient bridges, to Champorcher, then ascends to Col Laris and overlooks the Piamprato Valley in Piedmont.

It's a route that winds along trails, dirt roads, and forest tracks, alternating with short stretches on roads in the southeastern part of the Aosta Valley, recognized as one of the region's wildest areas.

You cycle through coniferous forests, through narrow valleys carved by glaciers and shaped by the Ayasse River, and then emerge among pastures and wide alpine meadows. You pass villages, mountain pastures, and bridges, in a landscape where nature reigns supreme, and traces of an ancient world coexist with modern mountain life.

You'll find refreshment points and refreshment stands along the route. There are also e-bike charging stations (remember to bring your own cable). The route is particularly suitable for e-bikes or more trained cyclists, and is accessible from late spring to autumn, depending on weather conditions.

Pontboset village and ancient stone bridges

Highlight • Settlement

Pontboset is made up of many small villages scattered along the middle Champorcher valley. The village is crossed by the impetuous Ayasse torrent which, over the millennia, has dug deep and wild gorges, creating very suggestive views. The confluence with two other lateral streams, the Brenve and the Manda, made it necessary to build numerous bridges, which gave the locality its name and which distinguish its territory in a peculiar way.

Royal Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Champrocher Royal Road is a charming historical route commissioned in the 18th century by the House of Savoy. It connected the valley floor with the hunting lodges, facilitating the travel of the nobility and their entourage. Today, it is a beautiful path immersed in greenery, with stone sections and splendid panoramic views of the valley.

Dondena Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Located at an altitude of 2,192 meters, the Dondena refuge is a former royal hunting lodge that still retains an original section dating back to the late 19th century.

This refuge is strategically located for high-altitude hikes, as it sits at the crossroads of the trails of the Gran Paradiso National Park, the Mont Avic Regional Park, and the Piedmont valleys. It is easily accessible thanks to its proximity to the municipal dirt road, making it an excellent starting point for hiking.

The trails surrounding the refuge are unpaved, making it a pleasant place to run.
