Hiking

From the mountain, through the gorge, to the lake: The hike through the Twannbach Gorge is a beloved classic in the Jura & Three Lakes Region. From Biel, take the funicular up to Magglingen, where the scenic section of the hike begins. With views of the three lakes – Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Biel, and Lake Murten – you hike along the Twannberg to the gorge entrance.

There, the well-maintained trail winds its way skillfully past steep rock faces and the rushing Twannbach stream, creating a truly spectacular natural spectacle. The picturesque vineyards and narrow lanes of the winegrowing village of Twann, situated directly on the lakeshore, provide a crowning finale. For the return journey from Twann, you can choose between the train and a boat trip.

A fee of two Swiss francs per adult and one Swiss franc per child is payable at the lower entrance of the gorge to help with trail maintenance. The gorge opens at Easter and can be visited until November. Caution is advised in damp weather, as it can be slippery.

Twann/Douanne

Highlight • Settlement

On the left bank of Lake Biel lies the historic winegrowing village of Twann. Viticulture has been practiced here since the 12th century, and fishing since the Neolithic period.

This charming winegrowing village is the perfect starting point for beautiful excursions. Winding lanes, old houses, and fountains characterize this idyllic village, giving it the feel of a medieval town.

Trail Reviews

Ulrich Steinmann
October 28, 2021, Durch die Twannbach-Schlucht nach Magglingen

https://youtu.be/FjWeBltbeHQ In Twann we still had fog, through the Twannbach Gorge too. When we got to the top the fog suddenly went away and we looked down at the sea of fog.

I shortened the way by taking the train to Magglingen. If you have the whole day at your disposal, you can confidently add on these meters of altitude. At the beginning in Magglingen you took the wrong path, but you get back into the correct one to Twannberg. The Twannbach Gorge is a beautiful gorge with an often wet path that can be slippery. The path through the gorge costs 2 Fr for adults and 1 Fr for children, which (I think) are reasonable. In Twann you have the option of returning to the starting point by boat or train. A nice tour, which you can easily do in half a day.
