Hiking

The Areuse Gorge is a true natural gem in the Jura & Three Lakes Region and is considered one of the most beautiful gorges in Switzerland. Sometimes narrow and wildly rushing, then wide and gently rippling, the Areuse River guides you along its course. Moss-covered rocks, historic and modern bridges, footbridges and staircases, primeval forest sections, and a few mysterious tunnels lend the hike an unparalleled sense of adventure.

The starting point of your hike is at the train station in the village of Noiraigue, which you can reach from Neuchâtel in about 20 minutes by train. Halfway along the route, the Restaurant de La Truite in Champ-du-Moulin invites you to a delightful break with many regional specialties. This tour is well-suited for families with children, provided the little ones are steady on their feet, as the many stairs make a stroller rather impractical. Dogs are welcome on a leash.

At the destination of Boudry, the regional train to Neuchâtel or Yverdon-les-Bains runs every hour.

Saut de Brot stone bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Saut de Brot bridge is certainly one of the most beautiful places in the Areuse Gorge. The old stone bridge takes you to the other side of the Areuse and makes a fantastic photo opportunity.

Champ-du-Moulin

Highlight • Restaurant

There's plenty to discover at Champ-du-Moulin. It has a small tavern with a lovely garden seating area and a restaurant converted from an old farmhouse. There's also a nature center with lots of information about the Areuse Gorge and a small shop selling gemstones and fossils. The perfect place to linger and refuel for the rest of your hike.

Rock tunnel on the hiking trail

Highlight • Natural Monument

Another rock arch on the way through the Gorges de l'Areuse / Areuse Gorge. One of the most beautiful gorges in Switzerland.

Chute de la Verrière

Highlight • Waterfall

Beautiful waterfall with a viewpoint. A pleasant rest stop can be found on the flat riverbank a little further upstream.

Bridge over the Areuse

Highlight • Bridge

A very special bridge over the Areuse River. It's wider at the beginning and narrows towards the end. The cleverly arranged planks create the feeling of being drawn towards the bridge.

In the Areuse Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

This gorge trail is pristine and wildly romantic. I recommend the section from Noiraigue to Boudry.

The narrow path is particularly spectacular from Champ-du-Moulin onwards, with its rock overhangs, steps, and bridges. It rushes through the narrow gorge, whose lush vegetation truly resembles a jungle.

August 20, 2021,"Pssst! Nicht stören, es ist grad soo schön!" Durch die Schlucht "Gorges de l'Areuse im "Val de Travers"
Gorges de l'Areuse. What a monumental spectacle! Our tour begins in Noiraigue, (pronounced Noiräg) right next to the public parking lot, (5 .- per day) and along the railway line. What begins rather unspectacularly at the beginning soon turns into a monumental natural spectacle of the roaring rushing kind. Both river and gorge now form a duet of numerous waterfalls, …

Today I hike for the second time through the Areus Gorge NE, it was also called the wild gorge, now you can call it the quiet gorge, the Areuse has almost no water.

the areuse gorge, the first half from noiraigue is nothing special apart from the stone bridge. the path was often wide and asphalted and I didn't particularly like it. after the delicious lunch at the hôtel de la truite (highly recommended), the path became narrower and rougher, leading over many narrow bridges and wooden walkways. I liked this part of …

A river, like a lucky bag. Whenever you think that's it, the Areuse turns it up again. Surprised, fascinated and charmed. And has been for over 100 years. In 1886 the association "Sentiers des Gorges de l'Areuse" was founded. Its goal: to maintain the paths, paths, stairs, railings and bridges along the Gorges de l'Areuse. And that's not a few. …

The Areuse gorge was our hiking destination today. So we got on the train early in the morning. Thanks to the tourist card, travel on public transport in the canton is free. We drove from Le Landeron via Neuchatel to Buttes, because first we wanted to take the cable car to Robella, but it wasn't open today, so we went …
