Hiking

Ålö is a well-preserved nature reserve renowned for rocky coastlines, peaceful pine forests, and breathtaking sea views. It has a reputation for being the “wildest” of all the SAT sections, with only a few families living on the island year-round.

In summertime, you’ll find Båtshaket — a restaurant at the dock where the Waxholmsbåten arrives. Here you can enjoy good food with a view over the surrounding islets. Outside the main season, there are no facilities, so be sure to pack provisions accordingly.

It’s best to hike the section counter-clockwise from Båtshaket, following the yellow-and-blue SAT trail markers. There are no accommodations on Ålö; the nearest options are on Rånö and Nåttarö to the south, or on Utö to the north. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but please be respectful of the nature reserve and leave no trace.

You can travel to Ålö from Nynäshamn via Rånö and Nåttarö. You can also reach Ålö from Utö via the Utö–Ålö gravel road connector stage, with the option to rent bikes for the gravel road section.

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
