Runmarö (Central Archipelago) - Stockholm Archipelago Trail

Runmarö is one of the largest islands in the Stockholm Archipelago. It lies close to the mainland, only a ten-minute boat ride from Stavsnäs — yet it offers a sense of calm that feels worlds away. A day’s hike takes you through open grazing land, forest paths, and along the edges of quiet lakes. Sea views and distant islands are constant companions, never far from sight.

Walk the trail in a clockwise direction, following SAT markings along most of the route. It’s worth adding a short detour from the main trail to Telegrafberget, the island’s highest point, from which you’ll enjoy spectacular views.

Runmarö has good facilities, including a grocery store, cafés, a restaurant, and a bakery. Overnight accommodations are available at Runmarö Rum i Styrsvik, and there are also cottages for longer stays. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but be respectful of locals — choose a discreet spot and leave no trace.

You can reach Runmarö year-round from Stavsnäs and Sandhamn, with several sailings per day. The SAT sections of Runmarö, Sandhamn (to the east), and Nämdö (to the south) complement each other well and can be combined into a seamless multi-island adventure.

The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
