Grinda is a hilly island with forests, cliffs, and superb viewpoints. Although one of the most popular islands in the archipelago, the island’s status as a nature reserve has helped preserve its natural beauty.
The Grinda section is full of variety. Along the northern coast, a technical trail offers a challenging but rewarding experience. You’ll experience beautiful coves suitable for swimming, incredible viewpoints, and also a few well-placed benches to rest and enjoy the surroundings.
The trail begins at the Grinda Södra ferry quay and soon passes Grinda Wärdshus, where you can stop for refreshments or leave your gear if you’re staying overnight. In summertime, you can refill water for free at the nearby guest harbour. North of Wärdshuset, the route becomes more technical after the campsite as it follows a narrow path. At the eastern tip, you reach the aptly named Viewpoint Hill — for many, the highlight of the entire section. From the top, you’re rewarded with an expansive view. Continuing from the hill and along the southern coast, the trail becomes less technical, although still with a few challenging sections. Walk the loop clockwise, following SAT markings along most of the route.
Facilities include Grinda Wärdshus with its restaurant and hostel, and Framfickan — a popular bar by the water’s edge. You’ll also find a farm shop, a café, and a camping area. Grinda is lively in summer with music nights, a regatta, and BBQ evenings. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but please be respectful of locals and remember to leave no trace.
You can travel to Grinda from Vaxholm and Värmdö year-round, and during the summer, there are also boats from central Stockholm. The stages of Möja, Svartsö, Grinda, and Sandhamn are very well connected, forming a natural cluster that can easily be linked to create a fantastic week-long island-hopping adventure.
The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
