Hiking

Visalpsee is a beautifully situated lake above Tannheim. This tour takes you along well-maintained paths to the lake and then on to the impressive Bergacht waterfall. The hiking trail is excellently maintained, and you only have to climb a few meters to reach the lake – yet it still offers fantastic mountain panoramas and tempts you with several cozy places to stop for a break. In summary: the perfect adventure for hiking families.

You start your tour at the Tannheimer Bergbahnen parking lot, from where you can easily reach Vilsalpsee by Alpenexpress train or on foot. Initially, the signposted hiking trail follows the road toward Vilsalpsee, but soon enters a sparse forest. On your hike, you will encounter the Vils River, which originates in Vilsalpsee and flows down to Tannheim. You continue upstream until you reach the picturesque Vilsalpsee.

The hiking trail leads you past the western shore to the Vilsalpe. You can take a break there either now or after your visit to the Bergacht Waterfall.

From the Vilsalpe, you'll have about 80 meters of ascent to reach the impressive waterfall. From the waterfall, the circular trail leads back to the alpine hut. For your return, follow the same path you took on the ascent.

Vilsalpsee Lakeside Path

Highlight • Lake

The Vilsalpsee is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Tannheimer Tal, if not in the whole of Tyrol. Nestled in a nature reserve and surrounded by towering mountains, it offers you a unique panorama. The way here is simple and well developed, making it suitable for the whole family.

If you like, you can take the bus from the north shore or return to Tannheim with a tourist train. At the bus stop you will also find the Fischerhütte restaurant and the Gasthof Vilsalpsee.

September 2, 2025,Wanderung von der Neunerköpfle Bahn zum Talschluss Vilsalpsee (Wasserfall) 🤩
After the weather in Sonthofen improved around 11 a.m., I spontaneously drove via Oberjoch into the Tannheimer Valley to the Neunerköpfle Bahn parking lot. From there, I headed toward Lake Vilsalpsee. Once there, I walked along the right side of the lake to the Vilsalpe. Since it was marked, I also took the circular trail over the beautiful waterfall at …

Nice and easy tour from Tannheim to Vilsalpsee, along the lake and then a circular route to the waterfall. Return from Vilsalpsee by bus.

Today our tour took us along well-maintained forest and forestry paths to Lake Vilsalpsee.
This lake is picturesquely surrounded by mountains. The light was spectacular, allowing for many reflections in the water.
We then continued along a gravel path past the Vilsalpe to the Bergaicht waterfall. The last part of the trail is very beautiful. Small root paths and rocks …

Unfortunately the weather isn't so nice today. But it was still a lovely hike to the Vilsalpsee, where the mountains are reflected in its green water. And the sausage salad on the Alpe was good too.

Between winter and spring in the Tannheimer Valley.

During a break in the rain, we set off for Lake Vilsalpsee. We follow the yellow signposts and reach our first destination after less than an hour. There's still quite a bit of snow in shady spots, which slows our progress somewhat. The scenery around the lake is beautiful and truly impressive, …

Unfortunately, the circular hike around the Vilsalpsee is not possible at the moment due to the risk of it collapsing, so we are on the right side and back again. On the Tannheimer Tal website you can find out whether the route is still closed if you want to run there

Third attempt at hiking to the frozen Bergaicht waterfall. Tannheim greets us with gale-force winds, which my weather forecast didn't predict 😳 but it'll be better further down the valley 😉 The path to Lake Vilsalpsee is quite pleasant, and the wind doesn't bother us much. Contrary to expectations, the gusts at the lake are all the more intense. We …

I always enjoy walking around the Vilsalpsee! But today it offered a special panorama with its surrounding mountains. Starting in Schmieden (🅿️ 7 Euro day ticket), we mostly walked the forest path towards the Vilsalpsee and arrived there just as the sun was peeking over the mountain and kissing the lake awake 🌞. The lake was frozen over and our …

Those preferring a shorter tour can take the Alpenexpress train, which runs every half-hour to hour from the center of Tannheim to Lake Vilsalpsee and back again – either one-way or round-trip. This saves you about 4km each way (approximately 8km in total) and about 1 to 1.5 hours of walking time – ideal
