Cycling

You start at the train station in Haiger and are soon surrounded by nature. The first few kilometers are a relaxed ride before a special highlight awaits you: the Rabenscheid Tunnel. This section, also known as the Balkan Tunnel, adds variety to the tour and promises pure adventure. At 1,114 meters, the illuminated tunnel is the second-longest cycle path tunnel in Germany, but for nature conservation reasons, it can only be used between mid-April and mid-October.

Beyond the tunnel, the landscape opens up. You continue along well-maintained cycle paths to Breitscheid, Erdbach, and Burg. The route remains pleasant, with gentle climbs and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The route then leads back to Haiger via Dillenburg.

Shortly before the finish, you reach the tranquil village of Sechshelden. Here, a lovingly restored former village blacksmith's shop houses the local history museum. The private museum is like a little journey into the past: In a very small space, you'll find numerous exhibits, and visitors are always eager to learn the stories behind them.

A special hidden gem – especially on warm days – awaits in the garden: an almost invisibly integrated earth refrigerator. Only upon closer inspection will you discover the spot where the lid opens, revealing a small drinks bar emerging from the cool earth. It's precisely these kinds of surprising moments that make cycling around Haiger so special.

Fischbach House (Haiger Local History Museum)

Highlight • Historical Site

The listed building was erected after the fire of 1723. During preparations for the town's 1000th anniversary celebration in 1914, the timber framing was exposed. Like many other houses, it had been plastered over for fire and weather protection. For a time, the Fischbach family and their butcher shop were located in this building, hence the name "Haus Fischbach" (Fischbach House). In 1978, under the direction of Dr. h. c. Karl Löber, the Haiger Local History Museum was established here. Many exhibits illustrate the history of Haiger and its districts from Celtic times to the 20th century.

Balkan tunnel

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

1,114 meters long, paved, and perfectly straight with a slight incline – this section is part of the new cycle path connecting Haiger and Breitscheid. The tunnel is illuminated, with the lights switching on segment by segment as you enter.

Routing note: The former railway line has been converted into a cycle path from Medenbach station onwards. The remaining section of track will reliably guide you along the way.

Anyone traveling through the Dill district and passing through Sechshelden should definitely visit the blacksmith's shop and the local history museum.

Rebuilt after the great fire of 1763, the blacksmith's shop showcases the way of life of the people of Sechshelden and the surrounding area, displays the blacksmith's tools, a small shoemaker's workshop, a fully equipped spinning room with a loom from 1755, as well as household items and furniture.

A tour suggestion from a Komoot collection of the town of Haiger led us into this area, which was largely unknown to us until now. Dillenburg was better located for the approach and the car parked well and for free at the stadium there, so we started the round from there. In retrospect, this proved to be a good idea, …

Do a little ride in the afternoon so that you're really hungry for dinner.
It was a very pleasant temperature for riding.
The elevation gain is wrong, it was only 350 meters.

In principle, a nice circuit, only occasionally federal and state roads are a bit too present, but this is compensated for by sections through green meadows... and the very unique tunnel....

I actually wanted to go back to Fuchskaute. But I changed my mind when I hit black ice on the hub.
So down to the flatlands.
