The black bog is a raised bog at the border triangle of Hesse, Thuringia and Bavaria in the Bavarian Rhön. Since the bog has been protected since 1939 and has been completely spared from peat extraction, it is now one of the most important raised bogs in Central Europe and belongs to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön. This tour starts in the northernmost city of Bavaria, in Fladungen. Franconian hospitality awaits you here in medieval half-timbered - but only after the sporting activity.

The black bog is a bog. That's why it goes uphill from 400 to around 800 meters. Unfortunately, you can not cross the moor by bike. However, it is very worthwhile to take a break and to take the circular route through the moor on a wooden footbridge on foot. The unique moor landscape will inspire you and, with a little luck, a few of the rare species that still live here will show up. For a quick overview, the 17-meter high observation tower on the edge of the moor offers.

Go on. Along small rivers and streams, along quiet roads and gravel paths, the route leads back to Fladungen, where said Franconian hospitality of the "state-approved resort" awaits you and offers you well-deserved refreshment. One thing is guaranteed: that you are exhausted but happy and satisfied to head home.

Highlight • Historical Site

Fladungen is a nostalgic small town with well-preserved historical buildings. A detour to the adjacent open-air museum is always worthwhile. Here you can understand the typical Rhön way of life with the help of many farms and buildings that have been rebuilt true to the original from the last centuries. In culinary terms you will also be well catered for here with a variety of regional dishes and snacks.

From here you can see quite far into the distance.
The route is also known from the "Hauenstein mountain race" that is held here every year.
Also makes you want to go downhill with the bike. 😄

The Silver Lake is the relic of an old basalt quarry that has not been in operation for a long time. Here you can impressively see how nature recovers everything. Even on the steep rock walls, trees have long taken root again. The turquoise water provides in good weather for idyllic mood surrounded by nature and invites you to take a little break.
