Hiking

This lovely short hike takes you to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's motifs on the southeastern tip of the island of Fehmarn. The artist spent three summers at the Staberhuk lighthouse, creating many of his works on this very stretch of coast.

The trail starts at the beach parking lot at the Staberdorf naval station. Here you'll also find information boards with further information about Kirchner. From the parking lot, walk south to the lighthouse. You can take the path above the cliffs or walk along the beach below. Among the works created here are "Women Striding into the Sea," "Fehmarn Bay with Boats," and "Fehmarn Coast with Lighthouse."

You can't enter the lighthouse, which Kirchner also painted several times, but you can easily see it from outside the property. The short path down to the tip of the island is worthwhile, as is a short detour to the west on the right side of the lighthouse. This is also where the motif for the work "Bathers between Stones" is located.

Then you return to the lighthouse and cross the road to the small Staberholz forest, which appears in the painting "Fehmarn Landscape, Forest Path." You cross the forest and return to the starting point above the cliffs.
