Cima di Terrarossa Trail (via Route 664)

Embark on a difficult hike along the Cima di Terrarossa Trail (via Route 664), a challenging 4.6-mile (7.4 km) route. You will ascend 2222 feet (677 metres) over approximately 3 hours and 58 minutes, following a mule track that winds through green meadows and past white rocky steps. The trail uses a series of switchbacks to conquer the steep slopes, offering a rewarding physical experience. As you climb, you'll find yourself amidst the grand amphitheater of the plateau at the foot of Montasio, with views expanding across the landscape.

To begin your adventure, head to the Piani del Montasio. You can reach the trailhead by taking the S.P.76 from Chiusaforte towards Sella Nevea, then following the municipal road directly to the plateau. Ample parking is available near the no-transit sign, close to the Malga Montasio farmhouse, making access straightforward for hikers.

This trail is renowned for its unique wildlife encounters; you are almost certain to spot tame ibexes along the green slopes. These friendly alpine creatures are often easy to approach, providing excellent photo opportunities. Additionally, keep an eye out for delicate edelweiss flowers nestled among the rocky ledges, adding to the trail's distinctive charm.
