The Maiser Waalweg Trail is generally considered an easy hike, suitable for most fitness levels and families. While Komoot rates this specific tour as moderate due to its length and total elevation gain of approximately 272 meters, the path itself is largely flat and well-maintained, following historical irrigation channels.
This Komoot tour of the Maiser Waalweg Trail is approximately 15.4 kilometers (9.5 miles) long. It typically takes around 4 hours and 15 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.

Yes, the Maiser Waalweg Trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through orchards, near livestock, or in more crowded sections, to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Maiser Waalweg Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
The trail features varied terrain, largely flat, winding through mixed forests, fruit orchards, and vineyards. Sections are secured by railings, particularly near steeper rock faces. You'll find both shaded areas and open sections, passing through meadows and along the Passer river.
Along the route, you'll encounter several highlights including the historic Planta Castle, the picturesque Apple Blossom Orchards in South Tyrol, and charming waterfalls on the Maiser Waalweg. You might also spot a Refuge On the Trail and even a Kiwi Orchard.
Parking options are available near various access points to the trail. Many hikers choose to start in Obermais (Maia Alta) or Saltaus. It's advisable to check local signage for designated parking areas, especially during peak season.

Yes, there are several opportunities for refreshments along the trail. You'll find traditional inns and cafes, particularly in the villages or near popular viewpoints, offering local specialties and drinks. The Refuge On the Trail is one such spot.
Pleasure hike along the Maiser Waalweg from Saltusio to Meran ... or out of nature into the city. Spring has definitely arrived here. Information about the irrigation channels is available at https://www.merano-suedtirol.it/de/meran/aktiv-entspannen/spazier-wandern/waalwege.html
The Maiser Waalweg begins at Planta Castle in Merano. If you are coming by car, you can park in the Obermais car park. If you are coming by bus, the Plantastraße stop is nearby. The Maiser Waalweg leads through beautiful apple orchards, vineyards and beautifully overgrown paths. There are great views of the mountains and the mountain farms. Part of it also leads above the Passer. A good place to stop for a break is just before the end of the Maiser Waalweg at the Torgglerhof; fine cuisine, but good value for money. At the end point in Saltaus, you can take bus number 240 back to Merano.
Wonderful hike along the Waalweg to Meran. Back either by bus, line 240, from the Therme bus stop, or by taxi, 40 euros. The taxis are right in Meran at the bridge. Dogs are also accepted. 🧑🌾👍🐕🦺🐾🐾
Today we started on the Maiser Waalweg from Saltusio to Meran, in addition to the great Waalweg with bridges, narrow footbridges and waterfalls, there were lots of plants to discover. Shortly before the first raindrops we reached our destination of Meran. We ended our hike with apricot slices, coffee and limoncello spritz, we went back by bus to St. Leonhard🌞😊🚶🏼🥾
Today, for relaxation, no vertical meters but always down the Waalweg to Meran. From there, take the bus up to Schenna and back downhill to the Saltusio campsite

The Waale (Waale Canals) are centuries-old water channels that crisscross western South Tyrol. They channel water from mountain streams to irrigate vineyards, apple orchards, and meadows. You can enjoy wonderful hikes along these canals, of which there are several. Our hike, along the Maiser Waalweg (Waal Trail), leads from Saltaus to Merano. If you are staying in Saltaus, you can take the 240 bus back to Saltaus from Merano.
