Cima Dodici Summit

Highlight • Summit

Cima Dodici (also known as Cima XII), between Portule and Ortigara, is the highest peak on the Asiago Plateau, as well as in the entire province of Vicenza: 2,336 meters. It is divided between Veneto and Trentino, hence the two crosses on the summit: a wooden one in Veneto and a metal one in Trentino.

On the Plateau, more in the past than today, this peak was also called 'Ferrozzo' (an Italianization of the Cimbrian 'Freyjoch', meaning 'Yoke of Freya'), because the Cimbrians dedicated it to the Germanic goddess Freya. The toponym 'Cima Dodici', which is now the most widespread and official, was given to it by the inhabitants of Borgo Valsugana: in fact, at certain times of the year, it casts shadow over the town at precisely 12 o'clock. Together with the nearby Cima Undici and Cima Dieci (which similarly indicate the time based on the position of the sun behind them), it forms a sort of 'natural sundial'. It is precisely for this reason that the three peaks are often written on maps and texts as XII, XI, X... like on a clock!

A long and challenging road, through a striking and rugged karst landscape, especially in the final stretch where you climb the rocks: at the top, a breathtaking 360° view, with the sheer drop of the Valsugana beneath your feet!

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Vallon delle Trappole Alpine Trail?

This trail is classified as "very difficult" (EE - for expert hikers) and is not suitable for beginners. It demands excellent physical fitness, sure-footedness, and prior alpine experience. Expect a consistent steep incline and challenging terrain.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The terrain is predominantly rocky and characterized by debris, with water often flowing through gullies. While there are some equipped passages with metal ropes and ladders, they are not numerous. You'll traverse large rocks and sometimes need to jump. The "Delle Trappole" gully can even be snow-covered in summer.

What should I bring and wear for this hike?

You should be equipped with sturdy hiking shoes, and a helmet is advised due to some equipped sections. Given the challenging terrain and potential for snow or slippery rocks, appropriate layers and gear for alpine conditions are essential. Consider bringing poles for stability.

What is the best time of year to hike the Vallon delle Trappole Alpine Trail?

The trail is best hiked in dry conditions during the warmer months. It is strongly advised against after rainy days or recent snowfall due to the increased danger from slippery rocks and potential snow in the gully. Always check weather and trail conditions before you go.

Are there any notable viewpoints or landmarks along the route?

Yes, the trail offers a true spectacle of the alpine environment with dramatic canals, valleys, large spires, and rock formations. The ultimate reward is reaching the Cima Dodici Summit, where the views are described as incomparable in their vastness and beauty.

Is there water available on the trail?

Yes, there is a significant spring known as "Ultima Acqua" (Last Water) located particularly at the start of the ascent to the Dodici. However, it's always wise to carry sufficient water for your entire hike, especially given the trail's demanding nature.

Is the Vallon delle Trappole Alpine Trail dog-friendly?

Due to the trail's extreme difficulty, rocky terrain, equipped sections, and potential for snow or slippery conditions, it is generally not recommended for dogs. It requires sure-footedness and sometimes jumping, which can be challenging for pets.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee to hike this trail?

There is no mention of specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking this trail. However, always check local regulations or park information before your visit, as conditions can change.

How long does it typically take to complete the hike?

The trail itself is estimated to take about 5 hours. If you opt for the longer, more arduous loop that includes the Vallon delle Dodici, the total duration can be around 8 hours.

Does this trail connect with other hiking paths?

Yes, the Vallon delle Trappole Alpine Trail can be part of a longer loop. Hikers often combine it with the Sentiero alpinistico attrezzato del Vallon delle Dodici (path 231), typically ascending via path 231 and descending via path 211 (Trappole). It also intersects with sections of the Sentiero di Val Caldiera - Ortigara.

What is a strategic way to approach the longer loop option?

For the longer, more arduous loop that includes the Vallon delle Dodici, a common strategy is to ascend via path 231 (Sentiero alpinistico attrezzato del Vallon delle Dodici) and then descend via path 211, which is the Vallon delle Trappole route. This approach can offer a different perspective and manage the challenging sections effectively.
