This route was planned by komoot.
The section leading to Forte Campolongo is generally considered easy, often following a well-maintained mule track. However, the path to Caverna del Siesòn can be narrower, with roots and stones, making it more challenging. An alternative loop starting from Spiazzo Garibaldi offers a moderate experience without steep climbs, suitable for those with some hiking experience.
The ideal hiking season for this route is from May to October, when there is no snow. During colder months, especially in winter, the path to Caverna del Siesòn can become icy and slippery, requiring appropriate gear and caution.
The Rifugio Campolongo is a convenient starting point for the trail and typically offers parking facilities for hikers. Another option is to start from Spiazzo Garibaldi, which is mentioned as an alternative loop starting point.
There are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Campolongo Fort and Caverna del Siesòn Trail itself. The area is part of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, which is generally open for public access. However, always check local regulations before your visit, especially if planning to enter specific attractions like the fort or cave.
The terrain is varied. You'll traverse flat pastures, ascend through a red fir forest, and encounter rocky areas. The path to Forte Campolongo is often a well-maintained mule track, while the route to Caverna del Siesòn can be narrower, with roots and stones, and potentially slippery.
The trail features several notable highlights. You can explore the restored World War I Forte Campolongo, offering panoramic views. Another key feature is the fascinating karst Siesòn Cave (or Sciasòn Chasm). Along the way, you'll also find viewpoints like Scoglio Brutta Bisa and a Picnic Area in SIC Altopiano dei Sette Comuni.
Yes, the route partially follows sections of the Forte Campolongo trail and the Sentiero della Pace nell'Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, offering connections to broader hiking networks in the region.
While the trail is generally accessible, specific rules for dogs may vary. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or near historical sites like the fort. Be mindful of other hikers and any posted regulations in the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni.
Yes, the Rifugio Campolongo serves as a convenient starting point and offers facilities, catering with local mountain dishes, and even accommodation. It's a great spot to refuel before or after your hike.
The entire area is steeped in history from World War I. Forte Campolongo, built between 1908 and 1912, was a crucial part of the Italian defensive line and is now part of the Ecomuseo della Grande Guerra delle Prealpi Vicentine, offering significant insight into the conflict.
The Caverna del Siesòn is a fascinating karst cave, one of the most interesting in the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni. It reaches a depth of 96 meters and historically featured an iced lake at its bottom. The cave's entrance is described as spectacular and impressive.
Departure: Spiazzo Garibaldi car park, Roana Follow the comfortable CAI 810 forest road that climbs slightly, with signs for Forte Campolongo. From the fort, go back down a couple of hairpin bends, until you reach the fork where you take the path that goes into the woods towards the Sciason cave, being careful to follow the white and red signs. From here, continue towards the Campolongo refuge, and then return towards Spiazzo Garibaldi along the path that runs parallel to the asphalt road
I recommend crampons, after the Fort going down towards the Ravine there are some delicate icy points.
The call of the Plateau: I (re)did this not very demanding, but very rewarding and suggestive ring. Up to Forte Campolongo you follow a forest road (former military road) with a calm and constant slope, which runs alongside a rocky overhanging cliff for a few dozen meters; but the chasm is covered by trees, and you realize its presence only by pushing with short detours (and a lot of attention) towards breathtaking panoramic points, exposed and unprotected! At Baita Caffellatte I left the dirt road and took a path that reaches the fort from below, with a beautiful view of the barracks of the troops, built in a daring position on the amphitheater of the gorge! At this point it is necessary to retrace your steps, to the hut and the easy forest road, to reach the entrance of the fortification; I strongly advise against climbing up from here - as I did and as per my track - because you have to climb the rocks to overcome a jump of a few meters. The visit (free access) to the restored Forte Campolongo is very interesting and accompanied by information panels: a remarkable military work, as is its panoramic position. The path from the Fort to the Refuge is extremely suggestive, so much so that it deserves a highlight! Immersed in a thick fir forest, arcane and mysterious, it is characterized by fascinating and unexpected karst phenomena, with white boulders covered in very green moss. The Voragine Siesòn is spectacular: a dark and deep mouth gaping in the middle of the forest! The final stretch is on asphalt, but it is not much and does not disturb. P.S.: to make the tour more complete and challenging, I suggest combining it with the Altar Knotto ring below; https://www.komoot.com/it-it/tour/879717683?share_token=a1yE0fuf79roSkbtSwG9Ab97WBr8ilLzJdjbGJnWwrcL4J9iDy&ref=wtd
