Hiking

To the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Alps, through mystical green larch forests, to the Europahütte with its panoramic views, and past tanned Valais barns: this circular tour has a lot to offer!

From the train station, you first hike through the village center, where many chalets and sun-tanned wooden houses exude a true Alpine atmosphere. You then quickly gain elevation in the shady, cool larch forest and can take your first break in a small clearing at the wooden cross. The route continues to the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge – it's 494 meters long – and can only be crossed with a bit of courage and a head for heights.

A good 200 meters higher up, the Europahütte beckons as a rest stop with panoramic views. With an impressive view of the landslide, you then hike back down the valley to the train station, refreshed and invigorated.

Old wooden houses in Randa

Highlight • Historical Site

The small barn settlement blends beautifully into the hillside above Randa. It evokes memories of times gone by, when life was meager and its maintenance laborious. Even more beautiful today are the small wooden structures that allow you to experience the mountains as you imagine them at home.

Stone towers in the forest

Highlight • Structure

Stone towers are often erected in the mountains as additional signposts or orientation points. Here in the forest, right next to the hiking trail, they hardly serve that function. Instead, there are a whole bunch of them, which is quite amusing to look at.

Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the Alps is almost 500 metres long and spans the Grabengufer from Lärchberg to Höüschbiel – at its highest point, 85 metres above the ground. Access is free and guarantees a thrill, as you walk on grating through which you can look down onto the valley floor. When it was built in 2017, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.

Europa Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Europahütte is a refuge at 2,220 meters above sea level, nestled among larch trees. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Weisshorn and Bishorn. The Europaweg passes through here, and it's also a stop on the Tour Monte Rosa (TMR).

Many thanks to my brother Beat for coming along. The tour had been on my plan for a long time! It was definitely gigantic!!! It won't be the last time I do the tour... ;-)

There were 830 vertical meters and we were out and about from 10:15 a.m. to 4:20 p.m.: ok, we also took a break of almost 1 hour at the cross and at the suspension bridge 😊 It was a very hot day ☀️

After we had climbed the Gran Paradiso in Italy ( komoot.de/tour/878041877 ), we drove on to Switzerland into the Mattertal and treated ourselves to a relaxed trail tour to the Charles Kuonen suspension bridge above the village of Randa. At 494 meters long, this pedestrian suspension bridge in the Alps is part of the Europaweg on the eastern side of …
