Hiking
Built into the sky by the master of light – right through the postcard-perfect alpine idyll of the Lech Alps, the hike takes you from picturesque Oberlech up to Skyspace Lech, a work by light artist James Turrell. The easy climb to the permanent installation on the Tannegg is well worth it.
From the Schlößle, you walk past larch wood facades through cozy Oberlech. The path gradually climbs. Five minutes later, you find yourself in a breathtaking backdrop of expansive alpine meadows. Here, you can enjoy a panorama of the tranquil valley and the towering giants beyond. Soon, you'll spot a low, grassy structure on the slope: Skyspace Lech.
Its modest appearance is deceptive. Through a 15-meter-long tunnel, you enter the oval, almost entirely underground color-light space. At an altitude of 1,781 meters, an impressive spectacle awaits – a circular opening in the ceiling frames the sky as if it were a painting. The movable dome can also close to create an artificial Ganzfeld effect, similar to other works by Turrell.
Shortly before sunrise and sunset, the interior is bathed in different lighting moods. With a view of the Biberkopf peak, you'll leave Skyspace Lech and return to the starting point of your hike full of impressions. If you plan to stay in Skyspace Lech for a longer period, you should bring some warmer clothing.
