The Kobarid Historical Trail combines historic sites and spectacular natural sights. Enjoy mysterious waterfalls and the jewel of the Alpine rivers, the Soča. History buffs will embark on a journey through time from antiquity to the First World War. Along the trail, you can discover the Kobarid Museum, the Italian Ossuary, the Tonocov Grad archaeological site, remnants of the First World War, and the Napoleon Bridge.

The tour begins in the small town of Kobarid, known for its exquisite cuisine and, above all, for its award-winning First World War Museum (a must-visit, it's worth a visit). First, the trail climbs gently to the Church of St. Anthony of Padua with its historic ossuary. From there, you'll enjoy magnificent views of the Soča and Kobarid. The trail then leads through shady forests to the Tonocov Grad archaeological site at an altitude of 412 meters. A steep staircase leads you down to the Soča River, where you can see the remains of the First World War. Cross the river on a gently rocking rope bridge and take in the fantastic view.

After about 500 meters, you reach the small but beautiful Mali Koziak Waterfall – a foretaste of the spectacular Veliki Koziak Waterfall (entrance fee applies). Be careful, the final stretch of the trail to the waterfall leads over rocks, scree, and a wooden walkway, requiring caution. You cross the historic Napoleon Bridge and return to the town center of Kobarid.

Italian Ossuary and Church of St. Anthony (Kobarid)

Highlight • Historical Site

The twelfth and final battle of the Isonzo (Soca) in 1917 later became known as the "Battle of Karfreit" (today's Kobarid). Thousands of people fell victim to the cruel trench warfare on the Isonzo Front.

The Italian ossuary, with the church of St. Anton (Kostnica s Cerkvijo Sv. Antona) in the center of the complex, was built in memory of the Italians who fell in the region. In 1938 it was inaugurated by Mussolini. Even today the memorial belongs to the administrative area of Italy.

The monument has the shape of an octagon that narrows in three rings towards the top, where the church, which was built in the 17th century, is located.

From the place you can crank up the way of the cross, which is laid out as a wide street, to the memorial. From there you have a wonderful view of Kobarid and the Socatal.

This extremely photogenic bridge crosses the Soča near Kobarid over a narrow rocky channel. The transition at this point has always been important. Only a few places along the raging river offered the opportunity to build a bridge.

In 1758/1759 the old wooden structure was replaced by a stone arch bridge. At that time there were Napoleonic troops in the region, which is how the building got its famous name.

However, none of the French were involved in the construction. The bridge was blown up during the Isonzo battles in World War I and was only rebuilt after the war.

Today we left our ship and are now back in Slovenia. Although it is very warm here too, we decided to go for a hike. A tour with a lot of history. On Tonovcov Grad lies one of the most important excavation sites in the Alpine region. This settlement already existed from the 4th century AD.
Then there are many …

The starting point of today's tour was again our campsite in Kobarid. In the south of the Julian Alps lies the small town of Kobarid, steeped in history. During the First World War, Karfreit (Kobarid) was heavily fought over during the costly Isonzo battles. Here Ernest Hemingway worked as a war correspondent and medical officer on the Italian side, describing …

After 7 hours of driving we arrived at our destination. It won't be an ordinary hut hike. This time we decide to hike with a lightly packed backpack and go on two to three day hikes in Slovenia at three different destinations in order to find out a little more about this country.
