Hiking

The Watzmann is the impressive heart of the Berchtesgaden Alps – this iconic mountain massif rises majestically above the valley basin and shapes the landscape of the Berchtesgadener Land region. With its 2,713 meters and striking silhouette, it magically attracts mountain lovers – it's not for nothing that it is reverently called the "Mountain of Destiny."

But don't worry: The Watzmann isn't just for experienced alpinists! Even ambitious hikers can experience its beauty up close. The trail to the Watzmannhaus, located at an altitude of 1,930 meters, leads along varied, well-maintained paths – some wide, some narrow, and from the Mitterkaseralm onwards, requiring a certain amount of surefootedness. But you'll see: the effort is always worth it, as the views are fantastic.

With good fitness, the tour can be completed in around four hours. And if you want to enjoy the full mountain experience, you can stay overnight in the cozy Watzmannhaus (don't forget to reserve in advance!) and start the descent the next morning relaxed and full of energy.

Great but extremely strenuous hike to the Watzmannhaus. ☺️ But the view (above the clouds) made up for it ☺️

Visited the Watzmann today. Great weather, great view, what more could you want?

Up to 70 hm below the Watzmannhaus enough, with the fog. 😄

Always exciting: the ascent to the Watzmannhaus. In particular, the Falzsteig in the second half is strenuous, but easy to walk in dry weather. On the way back we met many hikers wearing helmets. They plan to spend the night and then exceed or mid-peak the next day. However, we were glad to have mastered the day tour like this …

Super great hike up the Watzmann. We climbed up via the Hammerstiel car park. Half of the route is more or less moderately uphill on classic forest paths. Then the "zigzag paths" begin. Sure-footedness is important here. Basically, the climb is not a problem. The paths are very easy to walk on. The last quarter is very steep in places. …

Wide and sometimes steep forest paths turn into really steep, rocky switchbacks. It's nice that there is the Mitterkaseralm about halfway up! Very suitable for a rest before the ascent and halfway up the ascent. We weren't under any time pressure and could leisurely watch the cows munching. OK, then another two hours downhill, but we had reached our goal💪👍🥾⛰️

... on to the Watzmannhaus, the mountain about which there are so many horror stories berchtesgaden.de/wandern/wanderwege/watzmannhaus.

The climb is very steep from the start and quite bleak at first. This changes until you reach the Stubenalm. A wide view and the mountain cows with their loud bells invite you to linger. A few kilometers further on, a stony path begins, …

Due to the weather and too much snow, I ended the tour early...
