Hiking
The trail on Ingmarsö and Brottö follows winding paths through forests, past lakes, and across open landscapes grazed by animals. Brottö is considered an SAT section in its own right. It forms a small peninsula on the western side of Ingmarsö and is only about one kilometre long, so it makes sense to hike both islands as one continuous stage.
Facilities on Ingmarsö include a convenience store and a year-round restaurant at the southern quay. Be sure to stop at the bakery, where you can pick up freshly baked treats or sit among the dough mixers and enjoy a three-course meal at the restaurant, Bagarbordet.
Much of the route follows easy-walking gravel roads. Hike counter-clockwise around the island, as this direction is marked with blue and yellow SAT ribbons and arrows. You can begin from several points, although the planned route assumes you arrive via the rowboats from Finnhamn along Båtluffarleden (the Boat Hiker’s Trail).
During summer, the north–south ferry line sails daily between Finnhamn and Ingmarsö Norra or Ingmarsö Södra, and you can easily adapt the route to suit your arrival point. Ingmarsö is also accessible year-round from Stockholm, Vaxholm, Åsättra on Ljusterö, and from Boda on Värmdö.
If you plan to begin your tour on Brottö, you can reach it year-round from Åsättra on Ljusterö. You can also travel to Brottö from Stockholm via Vaxholm. If you’re hiking the Central Archipelago islands as a through-trail, Brottö is easily accessible from both Svartsö and Ingmarsö.
Ingmarsö has a range of accommodations, including the Bakers Cottage, where you can wake up to the sound of waves on the shore and the smell of freshly baked bread. B&B accommodations are found at Norrgården, the oldest farm on the island, dating back to the 17th century. Wild camping is permitted for one or two nights, but please be mindful of residents and leave no trace.
The Stockholm Archipelago Trail (SAT) is a waymarked hiking trail that connects over 20 islands, accessible by a public ferry network. You can choose to spend a day at a time on the trail, connect nearby islands in conveniently grouped sections, or hike the SAT as a thru-hike for the full experience.
