This Ecopista runs almost entirely on a former railway line. Two tunnels, a large iron viaduct and a large bridge over the Dão River are the impressive structures along the route. The starting point in Viseu is on the site of the railway station building, which has since been demolished. Viseu is now completely cut off from rail traffic. The railway line opened in 1890 and was the first railway line to reach Viseu. Freight traffic was discontinued in 1972, followed by complete closure for passenger traffic in 1990. Viseu itself is not on the Río Dão. From the starting point, the cycle path follows the river valley down. The cycle path is paved throughout and divided into three colour-coded sections. In 2007 the first cycle path section Viseu - Figueiró was completed, in 2011 the second part up to Santa Comba Dão. The locomotives of the early days came from the German machine factory Esslingen.
Great cycle from Viseau to Campsite. Short piece near middle has diversion in place for road works.
Advices on the track: on km 51.7 the ecopista ends abruptly on a dirt path. The track after is shit. Komoot put me descending stairs to an old bridge and after going up stairs on a single track full of wild greens. Had to walk it with my toddler and come back to hike a bike. Us Both ended full of scratches. Worst way of ending such a nice track.
