Dunes in Emsland? Yes, you read that right: During the Ice Age, glaciers brought sand to Emsland, which, after melting, was blown into dunes. To prevent the sand from blowing over settlements and fields, the inland dunes were planted in the 19th century.
The Surwolds Wald recreation area is the starting point for this circular tour. Passing Goldensberg, you'll travel to Esterwegen, where a visit to the MoorInfoPfad (Moor Information Trail) is worthwhile. A little later, the small Erikasee lake on the banks of the Ohe River invites you to take a break before continuing your tour towards Werlte. There you can visit the interesting Bible Garden and the 500-year-old Kreutzmann Mill.
After Werle, you'll travel to the Theikenmeer nature reserve – climb the Bernhard Grzimek Tower, visit the Nature and Geopark Station, or hike the Crane Trail. In Sögel, the impressive Baroque garden awaits you with Clemenswerth Castle, an 18th-century hunting lodge. On the final section, you can stop at three stone graves near Börger before returning to the starting point.
