Dunes in Emsland? Yes, you read that right: During the Ice Age, glaciers brought sand to Emsland, which, after melting, was blown into dunes. To prevent the sand from blowing over settlements and fields, the inland dunes were planted in the 19th century.

The Surwolds Wald recreation area is the starting point for this circular tour. Passing Goldensberg, you'll travel to Esterwegen, where a visit to the MoorInfoPfad (Moor Information Trail) is worthwhile. A little later, the small Erikasee lake on the banks of the Ohe River invites you to take a break before continuing your tour towards Werlte. There you can visit the interesting Bible Garden and the 500-year-old Kreutzmann Mill.

After Werle, you'll travel to the Theikenmeer nature reserve – climb the Bernhard Grzimek Tower, visit the Nature and Geopark Station, or hike the Crane Trail. In Sögel, the impressive Baroque garden awaits you with Clemenswerth Castle, an 18th-century hunting lodge. On the final section, you can stop at three stone graves near Börger before returning to the starting point.

Erikasee

Highlight • Lake

Lake Erika is a fantastic swimming lake that leaves nothing to be desired. It features a 200-meter-long swimming area, a playground, barbecue areas, a mini-golf course, a skate park, and an archery range. The kiosk by the lake is open during the swimming season, so you can refuel with cakes and other snacks. Restroom facilities are available at the adjacent youth campground.

Clemenswerth Palace

Highlight • Castle

A truly impressive castle complex: The buildings are beautiful and the park is very well-maintained. In the historic vaulted cellar of the former gamekeeper's lodge in the Osnabrück Pavilion, you will also find a restaurant and a café. If you wish to dine here, it is advisable to reserve a table in advance. Of course, you can also visit the castle itself.

More information about the castle can be found here:

Surwolds Wald Adventure Park

Highlight • Rest Area

For family outings in northern Emsland, the Surwolds Wald multi-activity park is undoubtedly a great attraction, with its diverse recreational offerings, including a summer toboggan run, mini golf course, observation tower, climbing forest, dining options, and fairytale forest.

July 21, 2025,Hümmlinger Dünentour von Werlte aus.
I actually chose this tour because I wanted to try cycling by numbers. But then I found it here on Komoot, which is really convenient. This allowed me to change the starting point and start practically from my front door.
Overall, I really liked the route. The paths are mostly very easy to ride.
If I were to do this …

The first 10 km and the last 10 km are beautiful, the rest of the route mostly runs along highways.

The tour was a bit shortened. We skipped the town of Werthe because there was some 🌧 rain in between.
The 🌞 arrived right on time when we arrived at the vacation apartment 😅
