Munster Valley Cycle Route

Cycling

This route, although accessible, requires some practice due to its elevation gain. If you're planning this outing with your family, remember to allow enough time for breaks and to go at your own pace.

Throughout this greenway, you'll explore a lush green setting, with rolling landscapes, undergrowth, meadows, and vineyards, all on a safe trail. While nature is at the heart of this outing, cheese also plays a central role.

Don't miss the many opportunities to stop at a cheese shop to take home a piece of Munster cheese. At kilometer 11, we suggest a detour to Gunsbach to discover the Maison du Fromage (Cheese House) and the Maison Albert Schzeitzer (Albert Schzeitzer House).

Our suggested route starts from Muhlbach train station and ends in the neighboring town of Breitenbach. The train stops in most towns in the valley, so you can easily plan your itinerary according to your schedule. In addition, there are numerous accommodation and dining options along the route. You can also depart from Colmar, by bike or train.

Wintzenheim

Highlight • Settlement

In this famous wine region (grand cru Hengst) there are remains of fortifications (1275), some old houses (Rue des Laboureurs), the beautiful Fontaine de la Vierge (18th century) and the old castle of the Knights of St John of Thurnberg, now the town hall. On the hill a ruin of a Gallo-Roman villa (1st-4th century).

Albert Schweitzer House

Highlight • Historical Site

Museum of Albert Schweizer, who was a Protestant doctor and theologian from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. An emblematic figure of philosophy in Alsace, he is relatively little known to the general public, but his work is quite significant. He is known for his universalism, and many recognize him as one of the precursors of humanitarian action, ecology, and even anti-speciesism.

The Cheese House

Highlight • Other

Not exactly a "quick stop," but a good destination for a tour. A free section of the exhibition offers lots of information about the history and production of Munster cheese. There's also a (paid) tour in French and German of the show dairy, with tastings of various Munster cheese varieties. We really enjoyed it.

Munster

Highlight • Settlement

Take a short break in the center of Munster to discover this typical little town in the Fecht Valley. You can visit museums there to learn about the town's culture and history.

But above all, don't miss the chance to taste the cheese that gave the town its name: the famous Munster! With a touch of cumin and a sliver of butter, you'll be in heaven.

This superb section of greenway guides you to the end of the Fecht valley, where small streams flow to form the watercourse that crosses the entire Munster valley.
Magnificent cycle path in a wooded setting, calm and refreshing in summer.
