Hiking
The Gaisberger circular hiking trail offers an easy 3.5-mile (5.6 km) loop with about 531 feet (162 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking 1 hour and 39 minutes to complete. As you hike, you will experience varied terrain, including gravel paths and forested sections, leading to magnificent panoramic views of Salzburg city, the Flachgau region, and the distant Watzmann mountain range. On clear days, you can even see the German border and the Salzkammergut Mountains from various viewpoints along the route.
Planning your visit is straightforward, as the trail is easily accessible from Salzburg city. You can take Bus 151 from the city center, with the journey lasting approximately 30 minutes to reach the trailheads. The route is suitable for all fitness levels and is considered family-friendly, with parts even accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, especially the section from Zistelalm to the main viewing platform. You will find several inns and huts along the way, perfect for a refreshment stop.
The Gaisberg area is a popular recreational hub, offering more than just this circular hike; it features a network of trails with varying lengths and difficulties. Beyond hiking, the mountain is used for road cycling, mountain biking, and paragliding. In winter, it transforms into a destination for ski touring and sledding, making it a year-round outdoor destination close to the city.
