Hiking

The hike to Jasper National Park’s Sunwapta Falls is an unforgettable experience. The upper and lower waterfalls tumble dramatically over the cliff edges, earning the name Sunwapta, which means ‘turbulent water 'in the Stoney language. The falls are fed by the legendary Athabasca Glacier, one of the six main toes of the Columbia Icefield.

The upper waterfalls are easy to reach from the car park and are therefore popular. We recommend this short Tour to the three lower waterfalls, where it is much quieter.

The descent is over rooty and rocky terrain, so take care. You’ll be rewarded with fantastic views of the cascades, the gorge and the surrounding mountains. It’s particularly spectacular here during the snowmelt, from late spring to early summer.

The waterfall can be reached via the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) on paved paths. It is about 18 meters high and about nine meters wide. The water of the Sunwapta River comes from the Athabasca Glacier and falls here in two stages. A hiking trail of about two kilometers leads to the lower waterfall (Lower Falls).

July 4, 2025, 🇨🇦 Jasper - Sunwapta Falls - leider nur kurze Runde möglich 2

Due to the massive damage caused by the forest fire in the region, only a few hiking trails are accessible, and even then, only to a very limited extent. Whatever, we tried to make the best of it. The waterfalls are always a feast for the eyes👍
