Hiking

This panoramic trail leads along the edge of the Leitha Mountains and will delight you with its scenic and cultural diversity. Sometimes you walk through hills and forests, sometimes along the extensive vineyards. From there you can enjoy many expansive views all the way to the glittering waters of Lake Neusiedl. A number of rest areas are ideal for a break, while the villages you pass through fascinate with their quaint wine cellars.

To warm yourself up a bit, the steepest climb of your hike awaits you shortly after you set off in Donnerskirchen. You hike through natural deciduous forests that are worth the effort. A little later you find yourself on a scenic path along the vineyards, which sets colorful accents, especially in spring, with the many cherry trees in bloom. In the quaint cellar lane of Purbach you can treat yourself to a little break in the Heurigen before heading uphill again.

Now you pass through the town of Winden am See and view the sculptures by the artist Wander Bertoni, which are freely accessible along the way. The museum next door is also worth a visit. Relax a little at the idyllic Ochsenbründl before you descend to the lovely town of Jois. There you can look forward to a glass of local grape juice before you head back.

In the starting point of Donnerskirchen you will find several parking spaces to start your tour. From your destination in Jois, the 280 bus from the Eisenstädter Straße stop will take you back to Donnerskirchen in a quarter of an hour. If the total distance of 27 kilometers is too long for you, you can also end your tour in the towns of Purbach or Breitenbrunn and get on the bus there. The train stations located a little outside the towns are also ideal for the return journey with the REX 64.

Purbach Cellar Lane

Highlight • Historical Site

It is probably one of the most beautiful cellar lanes on Lake Neusiedl. At the foot of the Leitha Mountains, 50 cellars belonging to Purbach winegrowers are lined up next to each other and today serve as warehouses, restaurants or wine taverns.

Contemporary art and nature: this is the ideal combination offered by the sculpture park with the sculptures of Wander Bertoni in Winden. The open-air museum with numerous large sculptures by the sculptor was built on the site of a Roman settlement in 1965. And since the extensive meadows between the sculptures are extensively cultivated, a colony of ground squirrels feels right at home here. Bertoni's egg collection with around 3000 artistically designed eggs can be admired in the exhibition pavilion. The sculpture park is free to visit all year round. To visit the exhibition pavilion, you must register by phone. For more information, visit wanderbertoni.com
