Hiking

On the Prince Albert Trail, you'll walk in the historical footsteps of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who married Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland in 1840. Your hike begins at the stately Rosenau Castle in Rödental, with its expansive castle park and impressive orangery. You can also visit the European Museum of Modern Glass before starting your hike.

From the castle, the trail leads south along the Itz stream to the Oeslau Estate. If you're feeling thirsty, a short detour to the Grosch Brewery Inn is recommended. There, you can enjoy a cool, home-brewed beer in the shady beer garden. The trail then takes you through the Bausenberg Forest to the Veste Coburg fortress, which sits imposingly atop the fortress hill. A stop here is worthwhile to explore the towers, walls, and courtyards of the castle and to visit the art collections.

In the Coburg Court Garden, you'll pass the monument to Ernst II, Prince Albert's brother, and the Natural History Museum. From the castle square, you'll reach the magnificent Ehrenburg Palace and the Coburg State Archives. In the city center, you can admire the Prince Albert Monument in the market square before continuing via Albertsplatz to Ernstplatz, where the hike officially ends. You can end the day exploring the winding lanes of the picturesque old town and enjoying typical Franconian cuisine at a local inn.

Here again like a walk. The castle is beautiful, well maintained and partly restored. Worth a visit in any case.

Coburg Fortress

Highlight • Castle

This castle is armed to the teeth - which is why it has never been taken by force of arms in its history (its garrison was only persuaded to surrender during the Thirty Years' War with the help of a forged letter). The art collection inside the castle is particularly worth seeing.

Ehrenburg Palace

Highlight • Castle

Ehrenburg Palace was built in the 16th century under Duke Johann Ernst as a representative city residence. Upon completion, the dukes' court was moved from the fortress to the new building in the city. According to legend, Emperor Charles V gave the imposing three-wing complex the name "Ehrenburg" to express his pride that the construction - rather unusual for the time - was only carried out by paid workers.
