Hiking

The Bouctouche Dunes are the longest in New Brunswick and the unspoilt beauty of their 12-kilometre (7.5 mI) stretch is particularly impressive. Breathe in the fresh sea breeze and enjoy the unique scenery.

The Irving Eco-Centre is responsible for preserving the dunes and you can find out about the valuable ecosystem and its flora and fauna from the observation tower. As you’d expect it also provides a superb view of the coast.

You’ll walk an 800-metre (2,600 ft) winding wooden walkway across a green, marram grass meadow, before reaching softer, sandy terrain. Bird watchers will find the walk along the beach particularly delightful. You’ll have the opportunity to spot Canada herons, the impressively large gannets, and smaller migratory birds stopping off on their way to their winter destination. The outward journey is the same as the return, so it’s up to you to decide where and when to turn back.

The hike is just over 35 minutes from the city of Moncton. If you plan to visit during July or August, be aware that access is limited to the first 2,000 people between 8am and 5pm.

Boardwalk at the Irving Eco-Centre

Highlight • Bridge

Access to the Dune of Bouctouche is via an 800-meter-long wooden walkway over the sand that begins at the Irving Eco-Centre. The eco-centre was created in 1997 to protect and preserve the dune and now manages the nature reserve. In addition to a permanent exhibition, there are also picnic tables and an observation tower that offers an impressive view of the sea and the coast.

The twelve-kilometer-long Dune of Bouctouche was formed after the last ice age and is now a nature reserve that is home to many species of migratory birds. It is one of only a few sand dunes on the northeast coast of North America.
