Hiking
This hike is ideal as a day trip from either Winnipeg or Brandon, and is close to the Trans Canada Trail – the longest interconnected network of hiking, cycling and water trails in the world. Situated in Spruce Woods Provincial Park, you’ll get plenty of fresh air, as well as two fascinating natural phenomena.
The Tour takes you through a dune-filled landscape that looks desert-like, but doesn’t technically qualify as such due to the amount of rainfall. Created by the delta of the Assiniboine River, the landscape is adorned with many colourful plant species, forming a nice contrast to the sandy soil.
You’ll also discover the Devil's Punch Bowl, a 45-metre (148 ft) deep, water-filled hole created by erosion. At its edges, the sand disappears into the blue-green water.
On hot days, it’s best to hike in the morning or evening and take plenty of water with you. Be sure to seek information about the poison ivy that grows here too.
