Hiking

Signal Hill and its striking Cabot Tower rises in front of the natural harbour of St. John's, Canada’s most easterly city. The North Head Trail is an easygoing hike with wonderful views over the vast Atlantic Ocean, the wild coast of Newfoundland and Labrador and the pretty harbour.

The Tour starts right by the Cabot Tower, which you’ll have no doubt already spotted on the skyline during your approach to St. John's. As you descend the steps towards the coast, the views over the endless ocean are incredible.

Your hike’s soundtrack will be the screeching of seabirds and the thunder of waves against the rocky shore. Depending on the time of year, you may also spot icebergs and whales. On the outskirts of the town, you’ll walk along the delightful Outer Battery Road, where you can discover old weathered fishing sheds and colourful cottages. Back at the Cabot Tower, you can learn about its history from the building’s information boards.

North Head Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Beautiful trail along the cliffs. Everything is well maintained, with at least 1,000 steps. Nature invites you to linger again and again. This means that the long path is hardly noticeable. Good footwear is a must. 😉

Cabot Tower on Signal Hill

Highlight • Monument

The Cabot Tower is the landmark of Signal Hill. It was built in 1897 in honor of the discoverer of Newfoundland, John Cabot. There are various information boards around the tower that reveal more about the history of the tower, and in the tower itself you can still see some relics of its former use as a broadcasting tower.
