Hiking

Embark on an easy hike along the Breitachklamm Loop Trail, a route that takes you through Central Europe's deepest rocky gorge. As you follow the path, you will experience the dramatic scenery where the river has carved walls up to 150 meters deep. Wooden walkways and bridges guide you above the roaring water, creating a mystical atmosphere with waterfalls and natural pools. This easy 2.5-mile (4.0 km) hike involves an elevation gain of 505 feet (154 metres) and typically takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete.

When planning your visit, be aware that the gorge can feel damp and cool even during summer months. It is wise to wear appropriate footwear, as conditions on the walkways might be wet. In winter, the entire Breitachklamm transforms into a unique landscape of ice formations, offering a completely different experience. Consider the season you visit to best prepare for the trail's conditions.

The Breitachklamm is notable for being the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe, a testament to the powerful forces of nature. Beyond the gorge itself, the trail opens up to reveal the green Allgäu hills and forests, providing expansive panoramic views of the surrounding Oberstdorf Mountains. This combination of a dramatic natural wonder and scenic alpine vistas makes the route a distinctive regional highlight.

Was in the gorge in August and you had to queue for at least an hour in front of the entrance. That's why I recommend visiting this beautiful gorge either in spring or in autumn 👍😎

Very beautiful gorge, absolutely recommendable, ideally follow the river further towards Riezelern and take the bus back.

There's no better time to visit the Breitachklamm than when it's pouring rain! Then you will probably have the gorge (almost) all to yourself... and you will get wet anyway. 🤭 Plus, when it rains, the stream and waterfalls swell, making the gorge experience even more exciting! You can warm up later with a hot tea in Alpe Dornach. You can find even more excursion tips and tours for the Allgäu here: https://wanderfolk.de/2020/07/09/allgaeu-wandern/

The tour can be called short and sweet. On the day of our return home on our Alpine tour, we wanted to take this highlight with us before leaving. Due to the corona, there is one-way traffic in the gorge, entry is below at parking lot P1. The ticket must also be purchased online. You should be there by 11 a.m., after that it was full. The gorge is refreshing and interesting. Large boulders lie in the water, more than 3 men high. That's when you realize how insignificant you are. It's good if you weren't there at the time of the crash 🤭. You cross the gorge in about 30 minutes, then the path leads up the mountain into the forest. There various hiking trails branch off to various alpine pastures, you are spoiled for choice. 😋 Finally the path led us over the Alpe Dornach down to the parking lot. A nice end to the eventful week! 😎

Today we visited the Breitachklamm. It was drizzling a bit, but that wasn't a problem because you get a bit wet in the gorge anyway. We parked at the bottom, then walked up the gorge (which was no problem with a dog) and enjoyed the nature. About 50 steps (open iron gate) were no problem for Bo, but other dogs might have difficulties. Once at the top we took the orange path because we wanted to go to Alpe Dornach. It was a really steep climb, but we were compensated for that with delicious cake and white sausages at @AlpeDornach. It was soooo beautiful there, I recommend it!

Today we went to the gorge. The weather was stable, but the heavy rain of the past few days was clearly noticeable. So much water was pouring into the gorge from all directions. It was truly a spectacle, but unfortunately very crowded :). Overall, it was a great trip, and our son was amazed by the force of nature.

September 19, 2021, Wanderung Breitachklamm

The Breitach, which rises in the Kleinwalsertal, also flows through a rocky gorge on its way - the so-called Breitachklamm. The designated circular route is not particularly long, but provides interesting and impressive perspectives when you walk along the steep rock faces and see the raging river below or next to you. Incidentally, at the highest point you are a little more than 1000 m above sea level. Recommended hike!

What do you do in rainy weather? Breitachklamm ❤️😍😍You always get wet there anyway 😂👌
