This hike is considered to be of moderate difficulty. The path is largely natural and easily walkable, traversing dense woodlands and rolling hills. You'll encounter some steep sections, particularly around the Roßkopf peak, which offers views of the Usinger Land. A good level of basic fitness is recommended, and some segments require sure-footedness.
The trail is rich in history, following the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes. Key highlights include the Saalburg Roman fort, the Limes Experience Trail, and the Limes at Roßkopf and Roman Tower. You can also visit the Herzberg Tower and Herzberg Inn for views, and see the Jupiter Column near Saalburg. Many sections feature visible Roman watchtowers, ramparts, and ditches with information boards.
The most convenient parking is often available near the Saalburg Roman fort, which serves as a central starting point for many Limes trails. There are designated parking areas for visitors to the fort and surrounding hiking routes.
The Saalburg Roman fort is well-connected by public transport. You can find bus connections from Bad Homburg, which is accessible by train. Check local transport schedules on hessen-tourismus.de for the most current information.
The trail is enjoyable throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer is also suitable, especially with the shade provided by the woodlands. While possible in winter, be prepared for potentially slippery conditions due to ice or snow on some sections.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through the Naturpark Taunus and potentially near historical sites, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure the safety and comfort of other hikers and visitors.
No, you do not need a permit to hike this trail, and there are no general entrance fees for accessing the hiking paths themselves. However, if you plan to visit the Saalburg Roman fort museum or other specific attractions, there may be separate admission fees.
Yes, as the trail is located within the Naturpark Taunus, it's important to follow general park rules. This includes staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, refraining from littering, and keeping dogs on a leash. Respecting these guidelines helps preserve the natural environment and historical sites for everyone.
Yes, you'll find options for refreshments. The Herzberg Inn near Herzberg Tower is a popular spot. Additionally, the Saalburg Roman fort area often has cafes or restaurants where you can grab a meal or a drink.
Yes, this circular hike intersects with several other official hiking routes. Notably, it shares sections with the European Walking Route E3, the Taunusklub Route 001 | Taunushöhenweg T, and the Limeswanderweg [Taunus]. This offers opportunities to extend your hike or explore different paths in the area.
Given its moderate difficulty and some steep sections, the hike is best suited for families with reasonably fit children who are accustomed to walking longer distances. The historical aspects, especially the Saalburg Roman fort, can be very engaging for kids interested in history.
At the moment I see and hear black woodpeckers all the time, I never noticed them before. Do you feel the same?
Beautiful, sometimes a little scrambling, walk from Saalburg around Herzberg and Marmorsteine. At Herzberg we ate a delicious, expensive and small portion of mushroom noodles.
Very nice hike along the Limes followed by a visit to the Saalburg. The storm damage and drought of recent years have left their mark. Foxgloves, which bloom everywhere, seem to like it here.
Due to the current weather, we hadn't planned a weekend trip, but simply stayed at home. We used the time to bake an "island" cake and reminisce about our island hiking holidays (Crete, Sardinia, Mallorca and Sicily). Jenny, who we had met on our trip around the Stubai Valley, came to visit us spontaneously. And we dreamed of the Alps together, remembered conquering the Alpspitz (my first via ferrata ;-)) and made plans for the future. ... But first a short digestive walk through a sea of foxgloves.
The tour is very varied. It offers quiet sections, great views and of course the Herzberg tower with a rest stop (be careful on Monday, closing day).
