This challenging mountain bike loop generally takes around 3.5 hours to complete, though experienced riders might finish it in 2-3 hours. Given its length and technical sections, plan for a substantial ride.
No, this loop is generally considered Intermediate/Difficult or a Hard mountain bike ride. It requires very good fitness and advanced skills due to its length, significant elevation gain, and technical sections like rocky descents and rock stairs. Beginners should look for easier trails.
The Sullivan Fire Road is a common starting point for this loop. Parking is typically available near trailheads in the Santa Monica Mountains, but specific parking details can vary. It's advisable to check local regulations and parking availability before your visit.
The loop offers a diverse experience with a mix of fire road climbing and technical singletrack descending. You'll encounter sections like the Farmer Ridge Fire Road, the rocky and rutted descent of Yedvart's, and the rock stairs on Cheney. Parts of the Backbone Trail within the loop can also be overgrown and technical.
Riders can enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding canyons and peaks throughout the ride. A notable highlight is The Hub (Topanga State Park), a popular waypoint offering great views over the Santa Monica Mountains. You'll also get views of the Valley from Mulholland and experience the diverse scenery of the Santa Monica Mountains.
As this trail is largely within Topanga State Park and other areas of the Santa Monica Mountains, dogs are generally permitted on leash on fire roads and some designated trails. However, specific singletrack sections may have restrictions. Always check current park regulations regarding dogs before heading out.
The Santa Monica Mountains generally offer good riding conditions year-round, but spring and fall are often preferred for cooler temperatures and vibrant scenery. Summers can be very hot, so early morning rides are recommended. Winters are usually mild but can bring rain, making some sections muddy.
While the trail passes through Topanga State Park, there are typically no specific permits required for mountain biking on the main trails themselves. However, some parking areas within or near state parks may require a day-use fee. It's always best to check the official Topanga State Park website for the most current information on fees and regulations.
Yes, this loop is a great way to link up various trails in the Santa Monica Mountains. It incorporates significant sections of the Backbone Trail, Sullivan Fire Road, and the Josepho Spur Trail. You'll also traverse parts of Rogers Road Trail, Mulholland Drive, and Cheney Ranch Road, among others.
Be prepared for the Yedvart's descent, which is described as 'super fun, kinda steep' with plenty of rocks and ruts. The Cheney section features notable rock stairs that require careful navigation. Additionally, some parts of the Backbone Trail within this loop can be overgrown and technical, potentially requiring you to push your bike.
Given the trail's length and difficulty, it's crucial to bring plenty of water, snacks, and essential bike repair tools. A helmet, gloves, and appropriate mountain biking attire are a must. Consider a first-aid kit, sun protection, and a fully charged phone. Due to the diverse terrain, a full-suspension mountain bike is highly recommended.
Route up Sullivan Ridge is fire road, coming back down Backbone is single track. I was riding an emtb. In June of '23 Backbone is over grown. You'll definitely want to be wearing long pants and shirt, gloves, etc. The drop down Into the valley at mile 16 - Josepho Drop - is very difficult, steep and very eroded. I had to walk parts. Definitely above my intermediate level skills and 65 year old body!
