Hiking

The Abt-Degen-Steig, a nearly nine-kilometer-long circular trail, takes you into the heart of the world of Franconian wine and its unique cultural landscape. Signposted throughout with the symbol of the "Green Bocksbeutel," the tour leads through the wine-growing towns of Schmachtenberg, Ziegelanger and Steinbach.

Along the way, numerous boards inform you about the geology, grape varieties and the history of wine-growing in this region. The barrier-free design of the circular trail makes it accessible to all hiking enthusiasts, while the atmospheric vineyards offer a perfect ambience for enjoyment and relaxation.

The craftsmanship of the winegrowers, who cultivate their steep slopes with great dedication, is particularly impressive. The natural care of the vineyards promotes biodiversity and gives each plot and each wine an individual character.

With over 1,700 hours of sunshine a year and the heat-storing Keuper soils, grapes ripen here to produce wines of the highest quality. Enjoy the wonderful views, the interplay of nature and culture, and let yourself be enchanted by the diversity of the Abt-Degen wine valley.

Winemaker's Staircase Steinbach

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The winemaker's steps are relatively easy to climb from below. Due to the often irregular stones of the steps, sturdy shoes, or at least sports shoes, are recommended. The descent requires a head for heights and a firm footing, as the steepness of the slope can be a bit of an adventure. From the stairs you have a wonderful view over the Main valley.

The Abt-Degen-Steig is almost always mentioned when it comes to the most beautiful wine hiking trails in Franconia. However, I have my own favorites and am critical of such listings 😉 So I formed my own opinion of this hike near Zeil am Main.

A pleasant round that still offers 1-2 highlights even in cloudy January.
Unfortunately we had to cancel the extension to the Zeiler Käppele - paw bent 😔🦮

Wine and Main, Bockstaschen and castle tempt you on the Abt-Degen-Steig, which runs through the vineyards between Zeil and Steinbach and is marked with a green Bockstaschen. We are in Lower Franconia and are hiking through the vineyards of Franconian wine, some of which is still produced here by hand. We pass through the Zeiler Kapellenberg vineyard, through Ziegelanger, take …

Very nice hike through the vineyards on the Abt-Degen-Steig, over the Schmachtenberg castle ruins to the Zeiler Käppele. From there you have a great view of Zeil am Main. It's also worth taking a break in the inn at the Zeiler Käppele, the cake is really delicious and the wine tastes good too 😉
From there it went through Zeil …

In summer temperatures, a special route through the Franconian vineyards on the slopes of the Main was on the program with interesting insights into the local wine culture.
At the end there was also a fresh Federweißer from the producer.

Lt. various search queries on the Internet, it is possible to walk the Abt-Degen-Steig on a circular hike of 25 km. Unfortunately, I can't find the appropriate gpx file anywhere. Can Haßberge Tourismus provide this? I would be very happy about that. Request for feedback. Thanks very much!
