An incredibly beautiful to drive, rather exposed but relatively easy way. You always have the steep slope next to you and you pass some avalanche barriers - impressive structures that protect the valley and its inhabitants every winter from the worst.

I had already done the tour up to the Rendl Alm shortly before crossing the Alps -
and apparently forgets how brutally exhausting the climb is:
700 hm over 7.5 km - so fun is different 🫣
Of course, the fantastic mountain world made up for all the hardships
(and the apricot cake even more ;-)

Rendltrail: Rendl Bergstation - Rendlalpe is now wonderfully prepared. S1-S2 only in the steep sections caution is advised, but 100 times better than before. Good job Dominik + TVB St.Anton

After the third day I had to do the same tour twice! There is no choice of difficult cycling routes on the main roads where you can cycle all the way around. There are also cable cars everywhere, and you feel stupid if you cycle up them yourself

Showing Translation

It started right away with inclines of up to 18% 🥵 a little foretaste of what awaits us in the next few days.
But cycling in this mountain world is just a dream 😃

Showing Translation

Don't underestimate the single trail, it's difficult to ride and definitely not for beginners or children. So be careful people ⚠️

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Rendlalm Tour?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll find sections along an old railway line, wider roads, and narrower trails with numerous switchbacks, especially on the ascent towards the Rendlalm Mountain Hut. Some parts, particularly on more challenging routes, might require pushing your bike. The descent can include narrower paths, forest roads, and wider serpentines.

When is the best time of year to ride this tour?

The best time to ride is generally during the warmer months when the trails are clear of snow. July is particularly beautiful, as the blooming alpine roses create a stunning natural spectacle, especially along the "Alpenrosenweg." Always check local conditions before you go.

Is the Rendlalm Tour suitable for beginners or families?

While the overall tour is rated as "difficult" and requires good fitness, sections are suitable for different abilities. A direct route to the Rendlalm Mountain Hut (1,791m) requires some fitness but isn't technically difficult. Shorter segments, up to two hours with 1,000 feet of elevation, can be suitable for all skill levels (STS S0 - S1). For families or beginners, consider using the Rendlbahn gondola to bypass the strenuous climb and explore higher, easier trails.

Where can I park and access the Rendlalm Tour?

The tour typically starts from St. Anton am Arlberg. You can find parking in St. Anton. A popular route for e-bikes begins along the Rosanna river from St. Anton, leading towards St. Jakob before ascending.

Are there any permits or fees required for mountain biking in the Verwall Alps or on this tour?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for mountain biking on designated trails in the Verwall Alps around St. Anton am Arlberg. However, always respect local regulations and private property. If you use the Rendlbahn gondola, there will be a fee for transport, though bike transport is often free.

Is the Rendlalm Tour dog-friendly?

The trail itself is generally accessible for dogs, but they should be kept on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife. If you plan to visit the Rendlalm Mountain Hut, check their specific policy regarding dogs inside the hut.

What scenic views or points of interest can I expect on the route?

You'll enjoy impressive panoramic views throughout. Highlights include magnificent vistas of Gampen, Galzig, and Valluga from the Rendlbahn mountain station, especially along the "Alpenrosenweg." You'll also see St. Anton, the surrounding mountains, and the glaciers of the Verwall group. The view from the High Trail beyond the Rendlalm Mountain Hut offers an even more spectacular panorama on clear days. The charming Moosbachtal valley is also part of the scenic route.

Can I use a gondola to shorten the climb on the Rendlalm Tour?

Yes, you can! An insider tip is to utilize the Rendlbahn gondola from St. Anton. It transports bikes for free, allowing you to bypass most of the strenuous climb and focus on the downhill sections or explore higher trails with less effort. This is a great option for those looking for an easier ride or to save energy.

Are there places to eat or rest along the Rendlalm Tour?

Absolutely. The Rendlalm Mountain Hut is a significant attraction along the route, renowned for its homemade food and welcoming atmosphere for mountain bikers. It typically operates daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., though it may be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so it's wise to check current opening hours.

Does the Rendlalm Tour connect with other trails?

Yes, the route intersects with and shares sections of several other trails. Notably, it covers parts of the Darmstädter Hütten Tour, the Sattelwaldweg, and the Stanzertaler Radweg. You might also find yourself on sections of the Jakobsweg Tirol and the Rosannaweg.

Are e-bikes recommended for this tour, and are there charging options?

E-bikes are a very popular choice for this tour, as they make the significant climb much more accessible. Many e-bikers can reach the Rendlalm Mountain Hut in 50-75 minutes. Conveniently, e-bike charging stations are available at the Rendlbahn mountain station, supporting longer adventures.
