Martin
July 7, 2023, Hochalpines Slickrock-Abenteuer: Der Vorab Trail bei Flims

Today we first took the gondola up from Flims to the Nagens station at 2,100m. From there we had to crank up to 2,570m under our own power, which is more strenuous at altitude than it sounds. Here, at the foot of the Vorab Glacier, the Swiss slick rock adventure could begin: The "black" Vorab Trail first runs through a bizarre rocky landscape that the glacier once smoothed over thousands of years - a grandiose playground for the bikes, especially the grip is quite good on the rocks. There were also some snowfields to cross up here. If the technical demands in the first sections didn't really justify the "black" category, the technical level improved as the course progressed: especially in the rocky grassland a little further down, there are technical narrow and short steep sections, that have it all and require good pedal management, care of the rear derailleur and clean line selection and driving flow in alpine terrain. There is also at least one short steep descent that is technically demanding. Positions S3 and otherwise decent S2 level in high alpine surroundings therefore rightly lead to the category "black". For advanced drivers a really grandiose experience in front of a dream backdrop. Absolute must-ride for friends of cultivated, high-alpine enduro entertainment!!! After a short uphill stretch, the trail then joins the Nagens trail (red, S2) on a forest path below the Nagens mountain station: This starts off quite tame with berms in open countryside, but then becomes more and more a really great enduro trail, in the course of which flowy, fast passages and bumpy roots and stones alternate in an entertaining way - we had a lot of fun here too! But the descent, which is more than 1,500 meters long, doesn’t end after the Nagens trail either: This leads into the lower part of the Runca trail (blue, S1), which is somehow clear to us today when we just let it run loose at the end was more fun than a few days ago, especially since we discovered some kind of "Enduro variant" running parallel to the trail (if that wasn't a hiking trail, we weren't so sure XD). The Runca Trail takes you back to Flims and to the end of a really great enduro tour, which clearly stands out from the "ordinary" and can therefore be strongly recommended! Mega!

Today I wanted to do the other big route from Flims despite the exertion of the last 2 days. The ascent was really tough and took a long time, it was above all a matter of not giving up in the head and having the will to get up there. Once at the top you were rewarded with an impressive panorama and a huge feeling of "I did it". The descent over the stones carved by the glacier was not always easy, but a highlight for me, the descent was cool overall with some difficult passages and a departure on my stomach (luckily in the grass) by me 🙈 It doesn't matter anything else I did until I did 2x had a flat 😅 It was definitely worth doing!

English below ========== Great weather at around 22°C Today we took the FlemXpress to the Startgels station at 1590m. We wanted to go all the way to the top. Unfortunately, only section 1 (to Startgels) was accessible. The onward journey to Segens and Nagens Sura stations at 2233m were closed from Monday to Thursday for maintenance work. So we had to struggle down to 2570m, which was quite strenuous at times. From the very top, at the Vorabgletscher 3000 station, we descended via the Vorab Trail. The Vorab Trail is definitely not for beginners. Some sections are very difficult to ski. ------------------------------------- Great weather conditions at around 22°C/72°F Today we took the FlemXpress to the Startgels station at 1590m/5216ft. Unfortunately, only section 1 (to Startgels) was accessible. The onward journey to blessings and Nagens Sura stations at 2233m / 7326ft were closed from Mon to Due to maintenance. So we've had to struggle up to 2570m / 8431ft, which was quite demanding. From the top, Station VorabGlacier 3000, we continued riding down the Vorab Trail. The Vorab Trail is definitely not for beginners. Some sections are very difficult to drive.

Great tour with highlights such as the Untere Segnesboden and the Segneshütte, the changing landscape the higher you get, and the opportunity to use the Nagens Trail down. Unfortunately, the trail is a bit too difficult for me, so I had to push a lot. In summer there are always a lot of marmots to be seen on the ascent to the glacier after Alp Nagens. The tour can also be done without a motor, only the passages up to Segnesboden and then to the mountain station of the Graubergbahn are extremely steep and tough.

The autumn season is actually over, the restaurant and cable cars are closed, charging stations and signposts have been partially removed.

October 1, 2023, Vorab 3000

Nice Sunday Tüürli to the Vorabgletscher, or what's left of it. From Flims to Alp Nagens on asphalt. After coffee there, continue along gravel and gravel roads to the highest point and back again. Now we head towards the Segnashütte, which unfortunately wasn't open. Wonderful view of the Tschingelhörner, Segnasboden, Piz Segnas etc. It's a shame it was so cloudy today. So, from now on the 2 great trails follow, Segnas and Runca, and in no time you're back in Flims. It was a cool tour. Thanks for accompanying @Flury Christian and @Tobias Guntli

From Flims it's practically a quick climb up to Vorab. The trip down was at its finest😊 Thanks Hanspeter! As always, well planned. 👏👌
