View of the Dunes of Texel

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the dune edge, you have a panoramic view of the dunes, with low vegetation and, in the distance, the sea. The path runs through an open landscape dotted with sea buckthorn and scattered pines, allowing for ever-expanding views. Gulls and other seabirds make their calls loudly as they soar above you.

De Slufter

Highlight • Natural Monument

De Slufter is the most famous nature reserve on Texel. Yet this area was created by human hands. In 1629 a so-called drift dike was built on this spot. With violent storm and high water, the water broke through the dike again and again, allowing the salty water to flow into the dune area. For centuries the people of Texel have tried to take the land from the sea, but that has never been entirely successful. It is now a protected area and you can see special flora and fauna here.

A nice hike on Texel Bin in de Koog started
Through a nature reserve to de Slufter and then along the beach back to de Koog

Showing Translation

Beautiful part of Texel, nice sunny weather and a fresh sea breeze

This tour goes over the beach and salt marshes. It is signposted by VVV Texel and leads along the beach for the first 3.5 km. When you reach De Slufter, turn right and walk through the dune area. After a short time you reach the salt marshes. Now always follow the Wag and we reach the starting point again.

We hiked from de Koog via the campsite to Kohgerstrand and then to de Sluftern. We saw a seal sunbathing on the way. We continued through the Slufter Valley and took a break at Cafe Slufter. We then walked through the de Muy nature reserve and encountered free-roaming Angus cattle.

Showing Translation

Today we walked from the hotel to De Slufter. The dike cannot be closed properly at this point. This has created a wonderful lagoon landscape. The Galloway cattle are free-roaming and are simply standing by the side of the path. A great hike with really nice people and wonderful weather.
