Schaarsbergen MTB Singletrack – Western Section

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

The Schaarsbergen route is an absolute playground, full of banked bends and more height difference than you would think. The constant technical steering, climbing and descending takes your legs well, as you move through a beautiful forest. This part of the route is perhaps the most beautiful, hidden in moss and greenery all year round. Delicious!

Papendal MTB trail

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

Part of the Arnhem MTB route runs through the grounds of the Papendal National Sports Center. The route is not extremely technical in this part, but certainly has its nice features. The curves at the beginning and the loop at the end (south) of Papendal are especially enjoyable. After Papendal you can continue the route from Arnhem towards Ede, or choose to pick up the route from Renkum.

Winding along the railway

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

This MTB connection is as old as mountain biking, but has received a nice upgrade in recent history in the form of a few well-constructed winding bends with a height difference. Very nice to cycle. The approach can be a bit muddy, especially after rain, but not impossible.

Mariëndaal Wall

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

The Mariëndaal wall is a noticeable part of the Oosterbeek mtb route, but is also great for gravel bikes. It's a roughed up dirt road climb on the edge of Mariëndaal park that's just that bit too steep and challenging every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty level of the MTB Route Arnhem - Purple route, and is it suitable for beginners?

Komoot rates this route as 'moderate', suggesting good fitness and advanced riding skills. However, due to fewer technical challenges and significant elevation changes compared to other local trails, it's also considered suitable for beginners. Be aware that it does include the 'Muur van Mariëndaal', the longest and steepest climb in the area.

What kind of terrain can I expect on this MTB route?

The route primarily uses existing paths with fewer singletracks and technical elements. You'll find several kilometers of 'flowy trails' around Sportcentrum Papendal and pleasant gravel sections, particularly in Mariëndaal. During wet weather, some parts can become quite muddy.

What are the main highlights or points of interest along the route?

Key highlights include the challenging Mariëndaal Wall, known as the area's steepest ascent, and the enjoyable 'flowy trails' around Papendal MTB trail. You'll also pass through scenic wooded environments and beautiful estates, including Mariëndaal and Warnsborn.

Where can I park to access the MTB Route Arnhem - Purple route?

While specific parking locations aren't detailed, the route is clearly marked with purple posts and can be accessed from various points. Many riders start near Sportcentrum Papendal or the surrounding estates, where public parking is generally available.

What is the best time of year to ride the Purple route, and how do winter conditions affect it?

The route is enjoyable for most of the year. However, during wet conditions, parts of the trail can become quite muddy and may even be temporarily closed. For the best experience, consider riding during drier periods, especially in spring, summer, or early autumn.

Is the MTB Route Arnhem - Purple route dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trail. However, as parts of the route share wide paths on busy estates and through nature reserves, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash and be mindful of other trail users and wildlife.

Are there any permits or fees required to ride this MTB route, and does it pass through the Veluwe?

There is no mandatory fee to ride this route. However, voluntary contributions are encouraged to support the trail's upkeep, which is managed by volunteers. The route is part of the larger MTB network of the Southern Veluwe, but specific entrance fees for the Veluwe park itself do not apply to this public MTB trail.

Can I combine this route with other MTB trails in the area?

Yes, this route is part of the larger MTB network of the Southern Veluwe. It can be effectively combined with the Schaarsbergen MTB Singletrack – Western Section route for a longer and more varied ride.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route primarily follows the 'MTB-route Arnhem' for about 90% of its length. It also briefly intersects with sections of the 'WNW Veluwe - Westerheide/Papendal - groene route' and the 'WNW Veluwe - Bakenberg/Mountainbikemuseum/Zypendaal - blauwe route'.

What should I be aware of regarding shared paths and muddy conditions on the route?
