Gravel riding

Gravel biking on The Bristol loop offers a diverse and engaging experience through the Cotswolds National Landscape. This difficult 69.4-mile (111.7 km) route features a significant 3696 feet (1127 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 8 hours and 14 minutes to complete. You will traverse rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and tranquil river valleys, passing through charming honey-colored villages and enjoying panoramic views from viewpoints like Cleeve Hill. Expect a mix of surfaces, from smooth gravel paths and forest tracks to rocky terrain and field margin bridleways, with some sections potentially requiring you to push your bike due to steepness or technical challenges.

Planning your visit requires good or very good fitness and advanced riding skills, especially given the route's duration and elevation. Be aware that some climbs are described as "techy and challenging," featuring large rocks and potentially slippery conditions. In winter, certain trails can become very wet and muddy, so consider the season when you plan your ride. A tubeless tire setup is often recommended to help prevent punctures on rocky sections like the Queen Charlton Byway.

This trail is notable for its incorporation of historic pathways, such as parts of the Roman Fosse Way, offering a unique sense of history as you ride. The underlying Jurassic oolitic limestone bedrock shapes the landscape, contributing to the iconic dry stone walls and the warm tones of traditional Cotswold villages. As the largest National Landscape in the UK, the Cotswolds provides nearly 800 square miles of varied scenery, from dramatic escarpments to tranquil valleys, ensuring a rich and varied gravel biking adventure.

Mangotsfield Railway Station (disused)

Highlight • Cycleway

Mangotsfield railway station has not served as a station since 1966. Opened in 1845, the small station was a stop on the Bristol to Birmingham route. Nowadays, it's used as a popular cycle path. You can still see the former station walls and platforms as you ride through the woods along the former railway lines.

Coldharbour Farm Lane Byway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

An absolutely five star byway that's great on gravel or MTB. From the north, the lane becomes increasingly mucky past the farm, before the tarmac gives way to a rocky road bed. After climbing to the top, a fun and non-technical singletrack leads you down to the stream crossing and up along the more tricky, loose singletrack on the other side toward Beach.

Queen Charlton Byway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is really quite a long sector of rocky gravel. If you're heading uphill it can be a real test of skill to ride it clean as the rocks in some sections are quite large and loose.

It does smooth out a lot as the gradient levels off and you ride past the golf course. Coming down on a gravel bike is also great fun and a real test of the puncture resistance of your tyres and your skills, and a tubeless set up is defo recommended! In the wet it does turn into a bit of river, for added fun factor.

East Dundry Bridleway & View of Chew Valley Lake

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Brilliant little off-road segment that offers great views over the city of Bristol. Although it's quite some climb to get up here, it can be pretty breezy, so make sure you pack enough layers.

The track is wide doubletrack, and although relatively short and non-technical, offers a great little alternative to the road that's suitable for both gravel and mountain bikes.

39.2 km

Rocks Lane Byway

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Aptly named, a steep climb up from Barrow Lane near Winford which is pretty rocky but clearable, before a long flatter stretch between the hedgerows. A good challenge!

43.1 km

Bourton Combe Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Although there are some parallel built mountain biking trails through Bourton Combe, this bridleway is a brilliant linking trail from the village of Flax Bourton heading south.

You're in the woodland the whole time, climbing if you're heading in this direction with a really tricky rock slab section to tackle on the way up.

Take care, very slippery when wet!

48.1 km

Belmont Hill Fire Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A cracking off-road alternative climb to the well-known Belmont Hill, you'll start on a quiet lane from the bottom near the farm shop, which then crumbles into a broken, rocky road.

When you reach the gate, take a left and continue to climb up the hard-packed wide forestry road, and keep your eyes peeled for the corner with the redwood trees, they're mighty impressive!

This is also cracking to descend, but be aware of other trail users, especially as this is a popular area for dog walking.

50.4 km

Wraxall Piece Forest Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

There are a few forest trails and bridleways in these woods, the latter can get a bit muddy! Still, it makes for a great detour to avoid the main road here.

52.9 km

Absolutely wonderful gravel climb or descent back into the centre of Ashton Court.

A number of the mountain bike trails meet at the top of the climb, keep going up and end up on Longwood Lane.

Some of the best views of Bristol are seen when descending too!

Leigh Woods Fire Road to Pill Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Take this wide and easy trail to the north from the trailhead to get down to the Pill Path along the River Avon.

Avon Riverside Path (Bristol to Pill)

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Linking Bristol to Pill, this sometimes gravelly, sometimes rooty and mucky trail runs alongside the River Avon and is perfect for riders, walkers and joggers. Take more care during peak times and beware this is usually flooded with big puddles all through the winter!

63.1 km

View of the River Avon from Avonmouth Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Great views of the River Avon, but being right next to the M5 it's a little noisy. Great for picking up the gravel track into the city centre.

Tip by

13

75.8 km

Compton Greenfield Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A cracking linking bridleway in an area that's otherwise a lot of lanes and footpaths, which connects the lane to Compton Greenfield and the farm near Easter Compton. A bit wet at times with both rocky and muddy terrain.

Tip by

80.1 km

Badger's Lane to Shaymoor Lane Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Not far from Pilning and Easter Compton you'll find this glorious bit of bridleway, linking Badger's Lane and Shaymoor Lane alongside the railway line. From the west, at first it's gravelly doubletrack which then turns into a more muddy singletrack trail.

Tip by

15

86.2 km

Hortham Woods Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliantly signposted and varied bridleway trail that avoids the road through Hortham village. You'll ride along field margins and along dirt singletrack through Hortham Woods (most delightful in April and May with the bluebells). A short and steep track then takes you from the field to rejoin Hortham Lane to cross the motorway bridge.

90.4 km

Lock's Lane and Cogmill Lane Bridleways

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

These two back lane bridleways link via Folly Farm to give a great ride on the outskirts of Frampton Cotterell in the Marle Hills. Enjoy really mixed terrain along here, including some rather wet covered singletrack!

98.0 km

Broad Lane Restricted Byway (West Section)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The first section of Broad Lane to the west, which extends further east to road, and then on over the railway crossing into Westerleigh. Enjoy this wide doubletrack, stony and dirty and anything but level!

Tip by

98.6 km

Boxhedge Farm Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Brilliant gravel road bridleway linking up Boxhedge Farm to the south to Broad Lane Byway to the north. Flat, a little rocky and wide, looks pretty Kansas-esque!

Tip by

100 km

Dramway Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

It's marked as a footpath from the northern end and bridleway from the southern end, but rest assured this is officially a bridleway and hence rideable. Brilliant compact mud and pretty wide too.

Tip by

20

103 km

Pomphrey Hill Bridleway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A little-known bridleway alternative to a short leg of the ring road cycle path, this light gravel trail is largely wide and flat with a single narrow style (no gate) at the Pomphrey Hill end.

105 km

Rodway Common

Highlight • Trail

Besides the expanse of common land at the top of the hill, there are some brill dirt singletracks leading down to the Bristol to Bath Path, and harder than they look! Stick to the zig-zags if you're finding it too tough.
