Hiking

On this challenging walk from Schellebelle station to Schoonaarde, the Scheldt is always nearby. You walk more than 23 kilometers along old meanders, nature reserves and flood areas. Got thirsty after all that beauty? End your walk with a refreshing drink at Café 't Oud Brughuys before boarding the train at Schoonaarde station.

Some highlights of this walk:

1. Schellebelle's feather
From the village center of Schellebelle directly into nature? This can be done by crossing the Scheldt with the ferry.

2. The Kalkense Meersen.
The ferry takes you to the Kalkense Meersen nature reserve, a controlled flood area where you are never completely alone. Thousands of waterfowl take refuge here, and with a bit of luck, stray Galloway cows may even accompany you along the way.

3. The Donkmeer
You will find even more water fun at the Donkmeer. This enormous artificial lake is guaranteed to give you a holiday feeling with the many boats on the water and the terraces on the shore.

Schellebelle Ferry

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

With this ferry (= Veer) you have to, no joke, ring the "Schelle belle", i.e. for the ferry. Then the ferryman or ferrywoman will take you across the water with a smile. Just keep an eye on the clock so you can make it back to the car after the walk.

A route where the landscape takes you, with some imagination, to times gone by. 'Peat extraction'. The many canals are now an excellent breeding ground for birds. Just enjoy the peace and quiet in this piece of bygone history. While musing about the past, we move on to the present.

Opposite 't Oud Brughuys on the Scheldtijk is a lamppost with a war history.
When the bridge was dynamited, the lampposts fell into the Scheldt. At the end of the last century, dredgers removed a bluestone pedestal from the water. N.a.v. On the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Berlare it was restored and now adorns the site as a memorial.

The pedestal reads "Municipality of Berlaere" with a relief underneath of Martin of Tours (patron saint) cutting off a piece of his cloak to give to a beggar.
At the very bottom hangs a narrow sign with the text:
"Commemoration October 3, 2004
Belgians fought here against the Germans from October 4 to 8, 1914
to secure the retreat of the army from Antwerp to the Yser"

There is a memorial plaque on the side wall of "'t Oud Brughuys":
"Respectful remembrance of
the Belgian Regiments
in the Battle of Berlare October 4 to 8, 1914
KNSB Berlare October 4, 2014 "

From October 4 to 8, 1914, there was heavy fighting as Belgian troops tried to prevent the advancing German army from crossing the Scheldt via the bridge between Schoonaarde and Berlare. The bridge over the Scheldt was blown up by the Belgian engineers on September 29. Thanks to the delay that the Belgian army was able to enforce on the German army in Berlare, the vast majority of Belgian soldiers in Antwerp were able to escape. After days of German artillery shelling, the Belgian troops had to admit defeat on October 8. In the meantime, the Germans had also managed to build an emergency bridge over the Scheldt near the Konkel.
All in all, there was relatively little damage in Berlare afterwards; most houses remained habitable. The human toll was higher, a total of 68 Belgian soldiers and 2 German soldiers died.
